Acts 15 - Series 2/Episode 04 - Fri, 10th Apr 2026 - The Brethren - Acts 15:22-35 - THE ANNOUNCEMENT - Revelation 07:09-10

Acts 15:23-24 They wrote this letter by them: The apostles, the elders, and the brethren, To the brethren who are of the Gentiles in Antioch, Syria, and Cilicia: Greetings. (24) Since we have heard that some who went out from us have troubled you with words, unsettling your souls, saying, "You must be circumcised and keep the law"-to whom we gave no such commandment-

The announcement of the Jerusalem Council's decision was communicated through this letter, which we read in Acts 15:23-29. We will now be studying this letter, portion by portion.

This letter from the Jerusalem Council was sent to the churches by Barsabas and Silas, who Paul and Barnabas accompanied. We can see a role shift here. It was now Barsabas and Silas, who were the leaders of this mission. Earlier, Barnabas and Paul, along with others from the Antioch church, were sent to obtain a decision from the Jerusalem church regarding this theological dispute. Acts 15:1-2 And certain men came down from Judea and taught the brethren, "Unless you are circumcised according to the custom of Moses, you cannot be saved." (2) Therefore, when Paul and Barnabas had no small dissension and dispute with them, they determined that Paul and Barnabas and certain others of them should go up to Jerusalem, to the apostles and elders, about this question.

Now that the verdict had been reached by the Jerusalem Council, the modus operandi of communicating this decision to the church in Antioch and other places was to be done by the elders of the Jerusalem church. Barsabas and Silas were to be accompanied by Paul, Barnabas and others from the Antioch church.

Paul and Barnabas were fulfilling the role of facilitators and introducers. The responsibility was now on Barsabas and Silas to communicate the decision of the Council to the churches. These are crucial underlying matters that we must consider and implement in our processes.

The letter began by clearly stating from whom this letter originated. It began with greetings from the apostles, the elders, and the brethren of the church at Jerusalem. How reassuring this must have been for the recipient churches that the church had a structure of authority.

This is how we are today as the body of Christ. Though it may seem that we are denominationally divided, we are still a part of the structure of the body of Christ. There is a central core theology that guards us. We have systems and structures in place for all of us, under whom we are all led and guided.

The letter was sent to the brethren of the Gentiles. The church is quick to express that the Gentile believers were their brethren. This truth resonates with other passages of Scripture. Colossians 3:10-11 and have put on the new man who is renewed in knowledge according to the image of Him who created him, (11) where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcised nor uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave nor free, but Christ is all and in all.

The introduction of this important letter is, by itself, the heart of the message of the letter. This is our message of oneness to the world. As disciples of Jesus, we are one.

John 17:21-23 that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me. (22) And the glory which You gave Me I have given them, that they may be one just as We are one: (23) I in them, and You in Me; that they may be made perfect in one, and that the world may know that You have sent Me, and have loved them as You have loved Me. / John 13:34-35 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. (35) By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another."

It is this oneness in the body of Christ that, though we are all from different backgrounds, will cause the people of the world to turn to Jesus. This is the church of Jesus. Revelation 7:9-10 After these things I looked, and behold, a great multitude which no one could number, of all nations, tribes, peoples, and tongues, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, with palm branches in their hands, (10) and crying out with a loud voice, saying, "Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!"

The church is the spiritual Mount Zion. Hebrews 12:22-23 But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, to an innumerable company of angels, (23) to the general assembly and church of the firstborn who are registered in heaven, to God the Judge of all, to the spirits of just men made perfect,

The church is receiving the unshakeable kingdom of Jesus. Hebrews 12:28-29 Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom which cannot be shaken, *let us have grace, by which we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear*. (29) For our God is a consuming fire.
