Acts 16 - Series 02/Episode 15 - Sat, 20th June 2026 - Opening the door for ministry - Acts 16:06-10 - THE MACEDONIAN CALL - I Corinthians 16:08-09

(Welcome to my website: valentinedavidar.in)

Acts 16:8-9 So passing by Mysia, they came down to Troas. (9) And a vision appeared to Paul in the night. A man of Macedonia stood and pleaded with him, saying, "Come over to Macedonia and help us."

Paul's mind considered several matters, but the one that took precedence was the door that the Lord opened to him for ministry. I Corinthians 16:7-9 For I do not wish to see you now on the way; but I hope to stay a while with you, if the Lord permits. (8) But I will tarry in Ephesus until Pentecost. (9) For a great and effective door has opened to me, and there are many adversaries.

What was the door for ministry that the Lord opened for Paul in Ephesus? Acts 19:8-10 And he went into the synagogue and spoke boldly for three months, reasoning and persuading concerning the things of the kingdom of God. (9) But when some were hardened and did not believe, but spoke evil of the Way before the multitude, he departed from them and withdrew the disciples, reasoning daily in the school of Tyrannus. (10) And this continued for two years, so that all who dwelt in Asia heard the word of the Lord Jesus, both Jews and Greeks.

The Lord opened the door for ministry in Troas. II Corinthians 2:12 Furthermore, when I came to Troas to preach Christ's gospel, and a door was opened to me by the Lord,

Troas was the strategic connecting port city to Asia, Macedonia and Bithynia. Troas was a place open to the Gospel. Paul's team made Troas their meeting point. Acts 20:4-6 And Sopater of Berea accompanied him to Asia-also Aristarchus and Secundus of the Thessalonians, and Gaius of Derbe, and Timothy, and Tychicus and Trophimus of Asia. (5) These men, going ahead, waited for us at Troas. (6) But we sailed away from Philippi after the Days of Unleavened Bread, and in five days joined them at Troas, where we stayed seven days.

Troas was like their main office where Paul kept all his parchments. II Timothy 4:13 Bring the cloak that I left with Carpus at Troas when you come-and the books, especially the parchments. A vibrant church had been established in Troas. Acts 20:7 Now on the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul, ready to depart the next day, spoke to them and continued his message until midnight.

The Macedonian Call was a significant ministry opportunity the Lord opened for Paul. It was a direct vision from God, and Paul had to obey. Yet, when we take an overview, we can see how precious and powerful the ministry was in Macedonia. Macedonia was the only place for which the Lord gave a direct call for ministry to Paul. This tells us the significance of Macedonia in God's purposes.

Paul first sailed from Troas and set foot on Philippi. This city was the gateway to Europe. Years later, we can see the impact the Gospel had on the continent of Europe. Missionaries travelled from Europe to the rest of the world, sharing the Gospel. Acts 16:11-12 Therefore, sailing from Troas, we ran a straight course to Samothrace, and the next day came to Neapolis, (12) and from there to Philippi, which is the foremost city of that part of Macedonia, a colony. And we were staying in that city for some days.

The Macedonian church was generous. We can see that the legacy of generosity came to the European churches, for they have sent and supported missionaries and missions worldwide. Philippians 4:15 Now you Philippians know also that in the beginning of the gospel, when I departed from Macedonia, no church shared with me concerning giving and receiving but you only. / II Corinthians 8:1-5 Moreover, brethren, we make known to you the grace of God bestowed on the churches of Macedonia: (2) that in a great trial of affliction the abundance of their joy and their deep poverty abounded in the riches of their liberality. (3) For I bear witness that according to their ability, yes, and beyond their ability, they were freely willing, (4) imploring us with much urgency that we would receive the gift and the fellowship of the ministering to the saints. (5) And not only as we had hoped, but they first gave themselves to the Lord, and then to us by the will of God.

Macedonia became a model for church growth. I Thessalonians 1:5-8 For our gospel did not come to you in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Spirit and in much assurance, as you know what kind of men we were among you for your sake. (6) And you became followers of us and of the Lord, having received the word in much affliction, with joy of the Holy Spirit, (7) so that you became examples to all in Macedonia and Achaia who believe. (8) For from you the word of the Lord has sounded forth, not only in Macedonia and Achaia, but also in every place. Your faith toward God has gone out, so that we do not need to say anything.
