Acts 16:26-28 Suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken; and immediately all the doors were opened and everyone's chains were loosed. (27) And the keeper of the prison, awaking from sleep and seeing the prison doors open, supposing the prisoners had fled, drew his sword and was about to kill himself. (28) But Paul called with a loud voice, saying, "Do yourself no harm, for we are all here."
I wish to focus on two words, But Paul.... These two words show us the enormity of the presence of Paul in that situation and for Paul to respond instantaneously.
Every situation God takes us into is by God's design, and we must anticipate and expect the Lord to be at work. We must respond as the Lord wishes us to. It is the Lord who strengthens us to do what the Lord would want us to do in that situation. Think of what would have happened if Paul had not called out and stopped the jailor from killing himself.
Proverbs 16:9 A man's heart plans his way, But the LORD directs his steps. Christian life is not just saying, "I'm waiting to hear from God, then I will act". We must take the right actions in life. The Lord has already taught us what we must do. Let us keep working and doing what is right in God's sight. At the same time, being conscious and aware that there will be the interventions of God for which we must be prepared.
_Genesis 40:6-7 And Joseph came in to them in the morning and looked at them, and saw that they were sad. (7) So he asked Pharaoh's officers who were with him in the custody of his lord's house, saying, "Why do you look so sad today?"
Joseph could have been pondering and being miserable over his unfortunate circumstances, wherein he was thrown into the dungeons, for being faithful. He could have passed by the two Pharaoh's officers and decided that he need not interact with them. Joseph noticed and asked these two men why they were sad. Joseph was being sensitive to the move of God. This was the move of God in which Joseph was participating.
The entire story of Joseph and how the Lord worked out His great deliverance is hung on this small conversation in the dungeons. Genesis 50:20 But as for you, you meant evil against me; but God meant it for good, in order to bring it about as it is this day, to save many people alive. What if Joseph had walked by those two men that morning and not bothered to speak with them?
Joseph's responsibility in the dungeons of Egypt was to take care of the welfare of the prisoners. Genesis 39:21-23 But the LORD was with Joseph and showed him mercy, and He gave him favor in the sight of the keeper of the prison. (22) And the keeper of the prison committed to Joseph's hand all the prisoners who were in the prison; whatever they did there, it was his doing. (23) The keeper of the prison did not look into anything that was under Joseph's authority, because the LORD was with him; and whatever he did, the LORD made it prosper.
Joseph was doing his job of taking care of the prisoners faithfully, and the Lord was intervening in the situation, working out His purposes. This is the key. We must be doing our work and responsibility in the way the Lord has already taught us. As we do our tasks faithfully before God, the Lord will intervene in amazing ways and fulfil His purposes.
Paul and Silas were not complaining about their circumstances in the prison in Philippi. They prayed and sang hymns to God, which was what the Lord had them do at that time. The Lord intervened in the situation and caused the earthquake, which made the prison doors to be thrown open and the prisoners released from their chains. The jailor, seeing what had happened, decided to end his life, but Paul, being fully 'in' the situation, was able to react quickly and prevent the jailor from ending his life. If Paul and Silas had been complaining in the inner prison, with their feet in the stocks, Paul would not have been alert to the situation and the jailor's life would have come to an end.
We must not forget that the work that we are doing is not an activity that we do in our own strength and understanding. Every moment of our lives, we are God-dependent, and we look to Him for guidance. We live and move and have our being in God. Micah 7:7 Therefore I will look to the LORD; I will wait for the God of my salvation; My God will hear me. Our eyes are always on the Lord. We are in a sense of anticipation of the move of God.
Our learning: Every situation is a divine placement. Every response is a spiritual responsibility. Every strength to respond is supplied by God.
