07 – Wed28Aug2024 – *Shalom through Jesus Christ* - _Acts 10:34-48_ – THE GENTILES HEAR AND RECEIVE THE WORD – _Colossians 01:19-22_
_Acts 10:36 The word which God sent to the children of Israel, preaching peace through Jesus Christ—He is Lord of all—_
Peter began by saying that God shows no partiality and then he said, _“But in every nation whoever fears Him and works righteousness is accepted by Him.”_ He then placed on top of these layers the principle that we see today, which is, _”The word which God sent to the children of Israel, *preaching peace through Jesus Christ*—He is Lord of all”_
*Fearing God and working righteousness is non-negotiable and so is peace (Shalom) through Jesus Christ for He is the Lord of all.*
Peace in the Bible is always Shalom. We have said earlier that the Jewish prophets spoke of the Shalom of God as God’s plan and purpose for man and creation.
I give below a quote of what is Shalom. "*The webbing together of God, humans and all creation in justice, fulfilment, and delight is what the Hebrew prophets call Shalom.* We call it peace, but it means more than mere peace of mind or a cease fire between enemies. In the Bible, Shalom means universal flourishing, wholeness and delight- a rich state of affairs in which natural needs are satisfied, and natural gifts fully employed, a state of affairs that inspires joyful wonder as its Creator and Saviour opens doors, and welcomes the creatures in whom He delights.
*Shalom, in other words, is the way things ought to be*.“ - Cornelius Planting
Shalom is the way things ought to be but what we see in man and creation is the opposite of Shalom, which is death. Man and creation are surely dead. I’m including creation because creation is hinged on the well-being of man. When man is alienated from God (dead) because of sin, then the creation also agonises. Creation is looking to man to be restored to God (life).
_Romans 8:19-22 For the earnest expectation of the creation eagerly waits for the revealing of the sons of God. (20) For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it in hope; (21) because the *creation itself also will be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God*. (22) For we know that the whole creation groans and labors with birth pangs together until now._
Creation is groaning, waiting for man to be restored to God and take back his original purpose which is to be a vice-regent of God. _Psalms 8:3-6 When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, The moon and the stars, which You have ordained, (4) What is man that You are mindful of him, And the son of man that You visit him? (5) For You have made him a little lower than the angels, And *You have crowned him with glory and honor. (6) You have made him to have dominion over the works of Your hands; You have put all things under his feet*,_
(The English translation says that God made man a little lower than the angels but the original Hebrew says, a little lower than ‘ĕlôhı̂ym - El-o-heem’) This is the reconciliation of God or God restoring Shalom and man to his original place to be co-ruler with God in Their image - ‘ĕlôhı̂ym - El-o-heem' (God in trinity)
This is the good news that God is restoring man to glory which we had in the beginning with God. This was the message of the angels to the shepherds. _Luke 2:14 “Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace, goodwill toward men!"_
This is the work of Jesus on the cross. _Colossians 1:19-22 For it pleased the Father that in Him all the fullness should dwell, (20) and by Him to reconcile all things to Himself, by Him, whether things on earth or things in heaven, *having made peace through the blood of His cross*. (21) And you, who once were alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now He has reconciled (22) *in the body of His flesh through death, to present you holy, and blameless, and above reproach in His sight*—_
Jesus had to die in his body on which the sin of man was laid and he was alienated from the Father. He could not call Him Father but called Him, “My God, My God…” _Matthew 27:45-46 Now from the sixth hour until the ninth hour there was darkness over all the land. (46) And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, "Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?" that is, "*MY GOD, MY GOD*, WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME?"_
Jesus was cut off from the Father. This death that Jesus died on the cross was comprehensive. The entire death of man and creation was laid on him. This is the wages of sin. This cost of sin had to be fully settled. Jesus settled this full payment of sin on the cross. *Jesus died on the cross.*
After making the full payment and declaring that it is now finished, He was reunited with the Father and He could call God as Father. _Luke 23:46 And when Jesus had cried out with a loud voice, He said, "*Father*, 'INTO YOUR HANDS I COMMIT MY SPIRIT.' " Having said this, He breathed His last._
