βThank You, Lord Jesus, that You rose from the grave and You desire for us to have a fresh and fuller understanding of the Scriptures. You also desire for us to be filled with the fullness of Your Holy Spirit. We give You all the glory and praise and in Jesusβ name, we pray. Amen.β
The Lord was moving the disciples from unbelief to belief.
Luke 24:12 But Peter arose and ran to the tomb; and stooping down, he saw the linen cloths lying by themselves; and he departed, marveling to himself at what had happened.
We saw that both Peter and John had gone running to the tomb to see for themselves what the women and Mary were reporting, that Jesus had risen from the dead.
Both Peter and John saw the grave cloths. The grave cloths were a great witness to the amazing truth of the resurrection. Peter saw and marvelled. John saw and believed. The resurrection of Jesus was completely different from the resurrection of Lazarus.
John 20:8 Then the other disciple, who came to the tomb first, went in also; and he saw and believed.
The Lord had appeared to Mary and the other women. The very same day the Lord had also appeared to the disciples. Jesus had risen and He had risen indeed. This was not a vision that they saw but they had met with the Lord themselves. Belief and reality had merged.
Our faith must fuse into the reality of life. They had met the risen Lord and they returned to their own homes. The disciples did not understand what the resurrection of Jesus meant for them and for the whole world.
Was the Lord just giving the disciples, dramatic experiences of Himself that He had risen from the dead?
The Lord was wanting the disciples to grasp how His resurrection was a part of His grand design, which was all given in the Scriptures. The disciples needed to be fully rooted in the scriptures, in order for them to be on fire for the Lord.
The truth of the scriptures had not yet dawned on the disciples. John 20:9-10 For as yet they did not know the Scripture, that He must rise again from the dead. (10) Then the disciples went away again to their own homes.
The truth of the scriptures, in their entirety, had to consume them. The Lord desired for the disciples to be thoroughly rooted in the scriptures, know that He is the God of history and live out of this understanding.
The disciples were the ones on whom there was a great responsibility. They knew Him and His word. Now, Jesus was alive. His words needed to make sense to them that He was reconciling man and all of creation to Himself.
The Word had to become flesh in the lives of the disciples.
Jeremiah 15:16 Your words were found, and I ate them, And Your word was to me the joy and rejoicing of my heart; For I am called by Your name, O LORD God of hosts.
The Lord has called us to be people of His Word. We must consume the Word and the Word must be the joy and rejoicing of our heart.
Jeremiah 23:29 βIs not My word like a fire?" says the LORD, "And like a hammer that breaks the rock in pieces?
We must be on fire for the Lord since the Scriptures have taken root in us. We are privileged to have the Scriptures in our hands, which is the basis of our belief. The Lord has left with us the witness of His Scriptures to fire us for Him and for the gospel.
Matthew 24:35 Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away.
The Scriptures had not yet fired the disciples. They had met with the risen Lord, but they just went back to their homes. How do the Scriptures become alive in us?
John 6:63 It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life.
It is the Holy Spirit who gives life to the Scriptures. By the flesh, we cannot understand the Scriptures for the Scriptures to become life in us. When we sit at the feet of Jesus and allow the Lord to minister to us, the Holy Spirit enlightens the Scriptures, to fire us for the purposes of God.
The Holy Spirit and the Word merge and an awesome awakening takes place in us.
The period from His resurrection to His ascension was to enlighten the understanding of the disciples of His grand design. His purpose is to reconcile mankind and all of creation to Himself.
Luke 24:45 And He opened their understanding, that they might comprehend the Scriptures.
They had received the Word for three and a half years but now the Word had to register in their understanding for the scriptures to bring life to the disciples. The Word must be Spirit and Life in them.
The disciples, trudging back to their home in Emmaus, had known that Jesus had risen from the dead but there was no change in them. They were trying to understand the events of the previous week, by their flesh, not by the Spirit. The Lord intervened and connected them, for the Word to become life to the disciples.
Thought to ponder
Are you plodding through life with the understanding of the flesh or are you living triumphantly with the understanding of the Holy Spirit?
