Acts 16 - Series 04/Episode 07 - Thu, 23rd July 2026 - Living by His word in an evil world - Acts 16:16-40 - EXPERIENCES AT PHILIPPI - John 17:14-18
(Welcome to my website: valentinedavidar.in)
Acts 16:16-18 Now it happened, as we went to prayer, that a certain slave girl possessed with a spirit of divination met us, who brought her masters much profit by fortune-telling. (17) This girl followed Paul and us, and cried out, saying, "These men are the servants of the Most High God, who proclaim to us the way of salvation." (18) And this she did for many days. But Paul, greatly annoyed, turned and said to the spirit, "I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her." And he came out that very hour.
The devil knows that we are the servants of the Most High God (El Elyon). It is into this world that the Lord has sent us. John 17:14-18 I have given them Your word; and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. (15) I do not pray that You should take them out of the world, but that You should keep them from the evil one. (16) They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. (17) Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth. (18) As You sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world.
The Lord has given us His word. We must abide in His word. How do we abide in His word? Man does not live by bread alone, but we live by His word. We do need food to eat, clothes to wear and a shelter. God knows that we need these things and He provides them for us, but He desires that we live by His word.
As those who have experienced His salvation, we live by the word in all circumstances. The devil's agenda is to take us away from living by the word to living by bread. When we live by the word, the devil hates us.
The Lord is not praying to the Father that we should be taken out of the world, but that we should be kept from the evil one. Though the evil one hates us, we need not be troubled, for the Lord has prayed for us. Let us press on to live by the word.
We are not of the world, just as the Lord is not of the world. The world lives by bread. This is what the Lord told the Jews who were seeking Him. John 6:26-27 Jesus answered them and said, "Most assuredly, I say to you, you seek Me, not because you saw the signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled. (27) Do not labor for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to everlasting life, which the Son of Man will give you, because God the Father has set His seal on Him."
This is the fundamental statement of life. We should not labour for the food that perishes but for the food that endures to eternal life, which is to labour for His kingdom. For the majority of us, we have decided that we must labour for the food that perishes and also serve God. Serving God is not about participating in Christian activities and programmes. Serving God is about labouring for His kingdom. Will we make an important commitment right now that we will not labour for the food that perishes but labour for the kingdom of God? Our workplaces and places of study are not for the bread that perishes but places of labouring for the kingdom of God. We study and work for His kingdom and His glory. We seek first His kingdom, and the food that perishes will be added to us. Matthew 6:33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.
We are sanctified by the truth. God's word is the truth. The word of God will consistently separate us from the world. This is a matter of discernment. As we take each step of our lives in the light of His word, the Lord will give us more light from His word to navigate through life. Philippians 1:9-11 And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in knowledge and all discernment, (10) that you may approve the things that are excellent, that you may be sincere and without offense till the day of Christ, (11) being filled with the fruits of righteousness which are by Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God. / Romans 12:2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. / John 8:12 Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, "I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life."
To this end, we are sent into the world. We are to live by the word, where the devil hates us because we are servants of El Elyon.
