12 โ€“ 22 Feb 2022 โ€“ We live in exciting times - Luke 23:50-56 - THE BURIAL OF JESUS - Bible reading: II Corinthians 6:3-10

โ€œLord Jesus, we live in a treacherous and evil world. The world understands the truth that is being shared by the church. They are resistant to the message of God and are determined to snuff out the church. Teach us to love those who seek to harm the church and to pray that their eyes would be opened to know You and escape the eternal wrath that awaits those who do not repent and turn to Jesus. We commit ourselves to Your care and protection. In Jesus name, we pray, Amen.โ€

Luke 23:55-56 And the women who had come with Him from Galilee followed after, and they observed the tomb and how His body was laid. (56) Then they returned and prepared spices and fragrant oils. And they rested on the Sabbath according to the commandment.

We have taken considerable time to understand the significance of the burial of Jesus and how it applies to us. Now, we are prepared to study the resurrection of Jesus. There is one more incident that took place, before the resurrection of Jesus.

This incident took place on the day of the Sabbath.

Matthew 27:62-66 On the next day, which followed the Day of Preparation, the chief priests and Pharisees gathered together to Pilate, (63) saying, "Sir, we remember, while He was still alive, how that deceiver said, 'After three days I will rise.' (64) Therefore command that the tomb be made secure until the third day, lest His disciples come by night and steal Him away, and say to the people, 'He has risen from the dead.' So the last deception will be worse than the first." (65) Pilate said to them, "You have a guard; go your way, make it as secure as you know how." (66) So they went and made the tomb secure, sealing the stone and setting the guard.

The Sabbath day is, ceremonially, a pure day for these Jewish leaders. They would not do any work and they would surely not go and meet a Gentile. These leaders flouted their own rules and were now meeting with Pilate on the Sabbath day.

They were calling Jesus, โ€œA deceiverโ€. They had done all their evil against Jesus in crucifying Him and yet the hatred in their heart against Jesus was not quenched. They also called the disciples as deceivers, who would come by night, steal the body of Jesus and say that Jesus rose again.

(When Jesus did rise again, as reported to them by the soldiers, they bribed the soldiers to spread the same malicious accusation to everyone.)

When we see lies being promoted as truth, and that too by leaders themselves, we ought not to be surprised. Let us be conscious that it is to this evil world, we have been sent.

We live in times, when the enemies of the cross of Christ, will come snarling at us with their teeth bared, to tear us apart. It is the Lord who is watching over us. Let us not be afraid of their threats but let us faithfully share the Goodnews of the love of Jesus with them. We do not want them to perish in the eternal fire but have everlasting life.

II Corinthians 6:3-10 We give no offense in anything, that our ministry may not be blamed. (4) But in all things we commend ourselves as ministers of God: in much patience, in tribulations, in needs, in distresses, (5) in stripes, in imprisonments, in tumults, in labors, in sleeplessness, in fastings; (6) by purity, by knowledge, by longsuffering, by kindness, by the Holy Spirit, by sincere love, (7) by the word of truth, by the power of God, by the armor of righteousness on the right hand and on the left, (8) by honor and dishonor, by evil report and good report; as deceivers, and yet true; (9) as unknown, and yet well known; as dying, and behold we live; as chastened, and yet not killed; (10) as sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing all things.

The world finds us strange people. They are not able to put a particular frame of reference on us. They see that we are not conforming to the norms of the world. They, therefore, want to get rid of us.

Hebrew 11:32-40 And what more shall I say? For the time would fail me to tell of Gideon and Barak and Samson and Jephthah, also of David and Samuel and the prophets: (33) who through faith subdued kingdoms, worked righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions, (34) quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, became valiant in battle, turned to flight the armies of the aliens. (35) Women received their dead raised to life again. Others were tortured, not accepting deliverance, that they might obtain a better resurrection. (36) Still others had trial of mockings and scourgings, yes, and of chains and imprisonment. (37) They were stoned, they were sawn in two, were tempted, were slain with the sword. They wandered about in sheepskins and goatskins, being destitute, afflicted, tormentedโ€” (38) of whom the world was not worthy. They wandered in deserts and mountains, in dens and caves of the earth. (39) And all these, having obtained a good testimony through faith, did not receive the promise, (40) God having provided something better for us, that they should not be made perfect apart from us.

We live in exciting times to be Godโ€™s people even when the world calls us deceivers.

Thought to ponder

Be courageous in Christ.
