*FRIEND OF GOD*
14Jun2021 - *The light of Jesus shining through us* - _Luke 21:25-28_ - WATCH AND PRAY IV (10) – Bible reading: _Isaiah 58:6-8_
The Lord has placed us in this world, in a time such as this, when there are several challenges, to be empowered by His Holy Spirit, to walk in God’s ways and be people of righteousness.
We are here to lift up our heads and shine as lights for Jesus.
_Luke 21:28 Now when these things begin to happen, *look up and lift up your heads*, because your redemption draws near."_
We are not to be weighed down with fears, anxieties, discouragement or be downcast at this time, but to look up and lift up our heads. We are here to shine for Jesus in the midst of the darkness, gloom and sadness that is in our world. We are here to be a community of people who are shining brightly for Jesus.
_Isaiah 60:1-2 *Arise, shine; For your light has come! And the glory of the LORD is risen upon you*. (2) For behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, And deep darkness the people; But the LORD will arise over you, And His glory will be seen upon you._
There is a darkness that covers the earth and deep darkness the people but it is in this context that our Lord promises us that His light will shine through us. He wants us to be available in His hands, for Him to use us as His lights.
_Isaiah 52:1-2 Awake, awake! Put on your strength, O Zion; Put on your beautiful garments, O Jerusalem, the holy city! For the uncircumcised and the unclean Shall no longer come to you. (2) Shake yourself from the dust, arise; Sit down, O Jerusalem! *Loose yourself from the bonds of your neck*, O captive daughter of Zion!_
*The Lord is calling us to throw away the bonds that were on our necks. We got ourselves into unnecessary and unwanted bondage when we ought to have been living in victory. The Lord is now calling us to cast away those shackles, shake ourselves from the dust and put on His strength*.
_Matthew 5:16 *Let your light so shine before men*, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven._
The Lord is calling us to abandon ourselves in the work of the Lord, in a time of crisis. The work of the Lord is not about us trying to do anything in our own strength, energy or understanding but to be totally cast upon the Holy Spirit, for He leads us and empowers us to do His work, which becomes our righteousness.
_Philippians 2:15-16 that you may become blameless and harmless, children of God without fault *in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world*, (16) holding fast the word of life, so that I may rejoice in the day of Christ that I have not run in vain or labored in vain._
Apostle Paul’s goal was to empower people in Christ. He desired that they would shine as lights in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation. This is the challenge and privilege for us that whatever may be our circumstances, we will shine for Jesus.
Here is the mission of John the Baptist. Though it is specifically about John, yet it applies to all of us as His people. We are here to introduce Jesus to our world and in doing so bring the light of Jesus into our dark world.
_Luke 1:76-79 “And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Highest;_
This applies to all of us for we are all called to be prophets of the highest. This is our mission.
_For you will go before the face of the Lord to prepare His ways, (77) To give knowledge of salvation to His people By the remission of their sins, (78) Through the tender mercy of our God, With which *the Dayspring from on high has visited us*; (79) *To give light to those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death*, To guide our feet into the way of peace."_
Jesus is the light. _John 1:4 In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. John 8:12 Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, "*I am the light of the world*. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life."_
It is the light of Jesus that shines through us.
_II Corinthians 4:6-7 For it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, *who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ*. (7) But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellence of the power may be of God and not of us._
Just as Christ was in the world, as the light, so are we in this world. We are the lights of the world. Since we are here as Jesus was in this world, we have the boldness to face the judgment.
_I John 4:17 Love has been perfected among us in this: that we may have boldness in the day of judgment; because *as He is, so are we in this world*._
What is it that our Lord is expecting of us in order to be His lights in our world?
_Isaiah 58:6-8 “Is this not the fast that I have chosen: To loose the bonds of wickedness, To undo the heavy burdens, To let the oppressed go free, And that you break every yoke? (7) Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, And that you bring to your house the poor who are cast out; When you see the naked, that you cover him, And not hide yourself from your own flesh? (8) *Then your light shall break forth like the morning*, Your healing shall spring forth speedily, And *your righteousness shall go before you*; The glory of the LORD shall be your rear guard._
*Thought to ponder*
```This work of God gives us our righteousness.```
