10May2021 - *Do not be afraid* - _Luke 21:5-9_ - WATCH AND PRAY I (10) – Bible reading: _Psalm 46:1-7_

God is our rock and our fortress. We look around us and the circumstances are bewildering, yet in a situation like this, we rest in the Lord.

_Luke 21:9 But when you hear of wars and commotions, *do not be terrified*; for these things must come to pass first, but the end will not come immediately."_

The Lord is calling us not to be terrified, not to be afraid, as we hear of all the commotions that are happening in our world.

_Matthew 24:6-8 And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. *See that you are not troubled*; for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. (7) For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And *there will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places*. (8) All these are the beginning of sorrows._

Let us continue to look at the pain of God’s heart over all that is happening to man and all of creation.

_Hosea 14:1-4 O Israel, *return to the LORD your God*, For you have stumbled because of your iniquity; (2) Take words with you, And *return to the LORD*. Say to Him, "Take away all iniquity; Receive us graciously, For we will offer the sacrifices of our lips. (3) Assyria shall not save us, We will not ride on horses, Nor will we say anymore to the work of our hands, 'You are our gods.' For in You the fatherless finds mercy." (4) "I will heal their backsliding, I will love them freely, For My anger has turned away from him._

The Lord longs for us to turn away from iniquity and return to Him and He will receive us graciously and He will save us.

_II Chronicles 36:14-16 Moreover all the leaders of the priests and the people transgressed more and more, according to all the abominations of the nations, and defiled the house of the LORD which He had consecrated in Jerusalem. (15) And the LORD God of their fathers sent warnings to them by His messengers, rising up early and sending them, because *He had compassion on His people* and on His dwelling place. (16) But they mocked the messengers of God, despised His words, and scoffed at His prophets, until the wrath of the LORD arose against His people, till there was no remedy._

God is specifically telling us about His anger with the people of God. The church has to repent first before we can expect the nations to repent before God.

We cannot excuse ourselves and say that our sins are only minor infringements before God. Friends, please consider the role of the church, which is to carry the pain of God’s heart on us and thus be the intermediaries between man and God.

What have we done? What is our iniquity as the church?

Yes, we come to God with all our worship and praise but our heart was for our personal gain. We came to God for our own wellbeing but not to wait on Him and be one with Him in His pain. Our choices and decisions in life centred only on ourselves and not on the pain of God’s heart. It is for this sin, this iniquity, of seeking only our own wellbeing and not giving the concerns of God the first priority, for which we must repent.

God is not banishing us, His people, from Him forever. Yes, we have been protected from the second death but now He is correcting the Church, refining the church, to be His instruments of bringing healing to the nations and not be focused on ourselves.

In this time of trouble that we are going through, the Lord is encouraging us not to be afraid.

_Psalms 27:1-4 A Psalm of David. The LORD is my light and my salvation; Whom shall I fear? The LORD is the strength of my life; Of whom shall I be afraid? (2) When the wicked came against me To eat up my flesh, My enemies and foes, They stumbled and fell. (3) Though an army may encamp against me, *My heart shall not fear*; Though war may rise against me, In this I will be confident. (4) One thing I have desired of the LORD, That will I seek: That I may dwell in the house of the LORD All the days of my life, To behold the beauty of the LORD, And to inquire in His temple._

One day we will have eternal rest in the presence of God but now, even in the midst of the turmoil, we can have the rest of God, for He makes us not to be afraid.

_Psalms 46:1-7 To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of the Sons of Korah. A Song For Alamoth. God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble. (2) Therefore *we will not fear*, Even though the earth be removed, And though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; (3) Though its waters roar and be troubled, Though the mountains shake with its swelling. Selah (4) There is a river whose streams shall make glad the city of God, The holy place of the tabernacle of the Most High. (5) God is in the midst of her, she shall not be moved; God shall help her, just at the break of dawn. (6) The nations raged, the kingdoms were moved; He uttered His voice, the earth melted. (7) The LORD of hosts is with us; The God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah_

_Psalms 56:2-4 My enemies would hound me all day, For there are many who fight against me, O Most High. (3) *Whenever I am afraid, I will trust in You*. (4) In God (I will praise His word), *In God I have put my trust; I will not fear*. What can flesh do to me?_

In the new testament, the Lord is encouraging the church not to be afraid.

_Luke 12:32 “*Do not fear, little flock*, for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom. Romans 8:31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? Hebrews 13:6 So we may boldly say: "*THE LORD IS MY HELPER; I WILL NOT FEAR*. WHAT CAN MAN DO TO ME?"_

*Thought to ponder*

```The devil’s attack on us is to build fear into us but we must overcome Satan by the truth, which is, *our God is our helper, we will not fear*.```
