22Sep2020 - *All of Jesus demonstrated through the church* - _Luke 18:9-14_ - THE JOURNEY OF HUMILITY 14 – Bible reading: _Philippians 2:3-11_

As we conclude this study on the journey of humility, let us consider the matter of humility in our relationships. Till this point, we have discussed the substance of humility before God but now let us turn our focus on interpersonal humility.

_Luke 18:13-14 And the tax collector, standing afar off, would not so much as raise his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, 'God, be merciful to me a sinner!' (14) I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted."_

The Lord desires that we carry the same ethos of humility, that we desire to have before Him, into our interpersonal relationships as well. _Colossians 3:12 Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, *humility*, meekness, longsuffering;_

The test of humility in us will be verified in our social relationships. This is where the rubber hits the road. I know that in my own experience, I struggle with humility in relationships, beginning at home. The Lord is patiently teaching me to experience humility in my relationships.

_Ephesians 5:21 submitting to one another in the fear of God._ This attitude of humility, which causes us to be submissive to one another, has to be our norm. The passage that follows here is the passage of the husband-wife relationship. The quality of humility, demonstrated by being submissive to one another, is the platform on which the husband-wife relationship is built.

_I Peter 5:5-6 Likewise you younger people, submit yourselves to your elders. Yes, all of you be submissive to one another, and be clothed with humility, for "GOD RESISTS THE PROUD, BUT GIVES GRACE TO THE HUMBLE." (6) Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time,_

Peter exhorts us by stating, _Yes, all of you be submissive to one another, and be clothed with humility_. Being a new creation in Christ infers that we are submissive to one another. This is what Jesus proved for us.

_Philippians 2:3-8 Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. (4) Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others. (5) Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, (6) who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, (7) but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. (8) And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross._

When we have humility in our relationships and are being submissive to one another, what will it result? The result will be, we will look out for the interests of others. Consider how you are today? Are you caught up with your own interests? Are we worried and anxious that matters for you have not fallen in place? If this is so…then be alerted that you do not have humility.

You would probably be distraught with me for saying that you do not have humility. This is the revelation of God’s word. Jesus humbled Himself and what was the result? He thought of us and did all that He did for us because of His humility. The Bible says that He did what He did for us because of His love but His love came forth from the base of humility. As we have affirmed earlier, humility is the base platform from which all other spiritual values are structured.

We, the church, are the embodiment of Jesus. All of His character and nature must be evidenced in us. When we look around at the body of Jesus, what do we see? We are presented with a picture of divisions, squabbles, disunity and lack of love between us. How did these arise? It arose because we did not nurture humility in our relationships. Will we as the church repent for our lack of humility and cry to God to fill us with His humility?

_Ephesians 1:22-23 And He put all things under His feet, and gave Him to be head over all things to the church, (23) which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all._

*Thought to ponder*

```The world around us must verify and say, “The church is humble as Christ”.```
