Luke 14 1-6 The evil of hypocrisy 10 Life of no consequence
21Nov19 - *Life of no consequence* - _Luke 14:1-6_ - Bible reading: _Hosea 9:1-7_
_Luke 14:2-6 And behold, there was a certain man before Him who had dropsy. (3) And Jesus, answering, spoke to the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, "Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?" (4) But they kept silent. And He took him and healed him, and let him go. (5) Then He answered them, saying, "Which of you, having a donkey or an ox that has fallen into a pit, will not immediately pull him out on the Sabbath day?" (6) And they could not answer Him regarding these things._
We understood that the problem of the religious leaders of Jesus’ time, was the problem of hypocrisy. The Lord made it clear that hypocrites will go to hell. We therefore began to look into the problem of hypocrisy and its symptoms in our own lives. The symptoms that we have seen thus far are,
1. Our heart is seeking after its own gain.
2. Giving importance to outward rituals, traditions, rules and formats and not giving importance to love God, be loved by Him and to love people.
3. Seeking glory from men.
4a. Appearances before men.
4b. Outwardly appearing righteous before people.
5. Seeking for signs and wonders.
6. Testing God
7. Carrying forward the evil of the previous generations
Today we will look at one more symptom of hypocrisy. This is a symptom of *living a life of no consequence*. Many of us are just existing. We want God to bless us and look after us. Our life revolves only around ourselves. This is how the religious leaders were and so our Lord called them as hypocrites. _Luke 11:44 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like graves which are not seen, and the men who walk over them are not aware of them."_
Jesus is saying here that their lives was not remembered and there was no recollection of them.
Friends, how is our life being lived out today? Are we connected with God’s grand design and the narrative of God? Do we see what God is doing over time and are we eager to part of the ‘big picture’ of God? If we are not and if our life is just for ourselves, then we are nothing but hypocrites.
This was the concern of God for the Israelites. They were to be part of the grand design of God but to a large extent they failed. _Hosea 9:1-7 Do not rejoice, O Israel, with joy like other peoples, For you have played the harlot against your God. You have made love for hire on every threshing floor. (2) The threshing floor and the winepress Shall not feed them, And the new wine shall fail in her. (3) They shall not dwell in the LORD's land, But Ephraim shall return to Egypt, And shall eat unclean things in Assyria. (4) They shall not offer wine offerings to the LORD, Nor shall their sacrifices be pleasing to Him. It shall be like bread of mourners to them; All who eat it shall be defiled. For their bread shall be for their own life; It shall not come into the house of the LORD. (5) What will you do in the appointed day, And in the day of the feast of the LORD? (6) For indeed they are gone because of destruction. Egypt shall gather them up; Memphis shall bury them. Nettles shall possess their valuables of silver; Thorns shall be in their tents._ Their life was not remembered and there was no recollection of them. _(7) The days of punishment have come; The days of recompense have come. Israel knows! The prophet is a fool, The spiritual man is insane, Because of the greatness of your iniquity and great enmity._
*Thought to ponder*
```Will you repent and commit to be part of God’s grand design?```
