Luke 11 27-28 Hearing God's word and keeping it Keeping God's word 9
*Loving and serving people* _Luke 11:27-28_
We cannot just be hearer of the word but we are called to the doers of the word.
What does it mean to be a doer of the word? We are called to love God, which is obedience to His word _John 14:15._ We are to love God with all our heart, with all our soul, with all our mind and with all our strength _Mark 12:30._ We are also called to love our neighbour as ourselves _Mark 12:31._ These are two commandments that need to be practised together. Loving God and loving our neighbour cannot be separated _I John 4:19-21._
Our life is a life of confidence in God because we are keeping His commandments and let us always keep in mind that this is not by our flesh but by His Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of grace. Grace is divine enablement. Jesus has given His Holy Spirit to us, who is in us, in order for us to keep His commandments _I John 3:21-22._
This is God’s commandment for us that we believe in Him, be dependent on Him, of His grace, so that we love one another _I John 3:23-24._ We cannot stop with being a believer in God. Our belief, our trust, our dependence on God must lead to a practical outworking of loving one another. _Sadly, in many of our Christian circles, we have practised and taught, to separate these two commandments of loving God and loving our neighbour. This was never how God intended it to be. Both the commandments of loving God and loving our neighbour must always go together._
Jesus gave us a new commandment to love one another as He has loved us _John 13:34._ The earlier commandment was to love our neighbour as we love ourselves _Romans 13:8-10._ Our Lord showed us His love by giving His life as a ransom for us. He did not come to be served but to serve _Matthew 20:28._ So, to love our neighbour, we must serve just as Jesus taught us in _John 13._ To serve it needed for Him to take off His robe and to take on the towel and the basin of water _John 13:4-5._ All the trappings of the self will need to put off and we need to adorn ourselves with all that is required to serve, if we must love our neighbour.
In obeying His commandment of loving our neighbour, there is great blessing _John 13:17._
*Thought to ponder*
```The blessing for the church to serve people around us, not to pursue the material sensations of the world.```
