_Acts 15:7-11 And when there had been much dispute, Peter rose up and said to them: "Men and brethren, you know that a good while ago God chose among us, that by my mouth the Gentiles should hear the word of the gospel and believe. (8) *So God, who knows the heart, acknowledged them by giving them the Holy Spirit, just as He did to us*, (9) and made no distinction between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith. (10) Now therefore, why do you test God by putting a yoke on the neck of the disciples which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear? (11) But *we believe that through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ we shall be saved in the same manner as they*."_
God knows the heart, and He gives to every man according to what he deserves. _Jeremiah 17:10 I, the LORD, search the heart, I test the mind, Even to give every man according to his ways, According to the fruit of his doings._
God weighs the motives of man’s heart. _Proverbs 24:12 If you say, "Surely we did not know this," Does not He who weighs the hearts consider it? He who keeps your soul, does He not know it? And will He not render to each man according to his deeds?_
David instructed Solomon to guard the motives of his heart as he took over as the king of Israel. _I Chronicles 28:9 "As for you, my son Solomon, know the God of your father, and serve Him with a loyal heart and with a willing mind; for *the LORD searches all hearts and understands all the intent of the thoughts*. If you seek Him, He will be found by you; but if you forsake Him, He will cast you off forever._
This was how God chose David to be the king of Israel. _I Samuel 16:7 But the LORD said to Samuel, "Do not look at his appearance or at his physical stature, because I have refused him. For the LORD does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but *the LORD looks at the heart*."_
When we stand before God, *He will judge us according to the motives of our hearts*. _Romans 2:16 in the day when God will judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ, according to my gospel._ / _Hebrews 4:12-13 For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. (13) And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account. / _Ecclesiastes 12:14 For God will bring every work into judgment, Including every secret thing, Whether good or evil._
Knowing that God will judge the motives of man’s heart and spirit, we must seek the Lord for a clean heart and spirit. _Psalm 51:10 Create in me a clean heart, O God, And renew a steadfast spirit within me._ / _Proverbs 4:23 Above everything else guard your heart, because from it flow the springs of life._ (ISV)
The basis of our relationship with God is about the surrender of our hearts to God, from which some have strayed and replaced that foundation with other narratives. _I Timothy 1:5-6 Now the purpose of the commandment is love from a pure heart, from a good conscience, and from sincere faith, (6) from which some, having strayed, have turned aside to idle talk,_ What are the things that derail us in our hearts in our relationship with God? Several things take our hearts away from God.
Our heart seeks personal gain. _Ezekiel 33:31 So they come to you as people do, they sit before you as My people, and they hear your words, but they do not do them; for with their mouth they show much love, but *their hearts pursue their own gain*._
We do not truly believe in God, for our eyes are on other things. This causes hardness of the heart. _Hebrews 3:12-13 Beware, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief in departing from the living God; (13) but exhort one another daily, while it is called "TODAY," lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin._ These are the idols of our hearts. _Ezekiel 14:3 "Son of man, these men have set up their idols in their hearts, and put before them that which causes them to stumble into iniquity. Should I let Myself be inquired of at all by them?_
Pride will cause us to stumble in our hearts. _Proverbs 16:18 Pride goes before destruction, And a haughty spirit before a fall._ Lust and hidden sin will hinder our surrender to God. _Psalm 66:18 If I regard iniquity in my heart, The Lord will not hear._ / _Matthew 5:8 Blessed are the pure in heart, For they shall see God._
The world will take us away from God in our hearts. _I John 2:15-16 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. (16) For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world._
