Acts 17:7 Jason has harbored them, and these are all acting contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying there is another king-Jesus."
The brethren were accused of acting contrary to the decrees of Caesar and, in particular, saying that there is another king-Jesus.
Paul explains our position as the church to the governing nations. Romans 13:1-7 Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God. (2) Therefore whoever resists the authority resists the ordinance of God, and those who resist will bring judgment on themselves. (3) For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to evil. Do you want to be unafraid of the authority? Do what is good, and you will have praise from the same. (4) For he is God's minister to you for good. But if you do evil, be afraid; for he does not bear the sword in vain; for he is God's minister, an avenger to execute wrath on him who practices evil. (5) Therefore you must be subject, not only because of wrath but also for conscience' sake. (6) For because of this you also pay taxes, for they are God's ministers attending continually to this very thing. (7) Render therefore to all their due: taxes to whom taxes are due, customs to whom customs, fear to whom fear, honor to whom honor.
We are to put to silence the ignorance of foolish people by submitting to the ordinances of our governments. I Peter 2:13-15 Therefore submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord's sake, whether to the king as supreme, (14) or to governors, as to those who are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers and for the praise of those who do good. (15) For this is the will of God, that by doing good you may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men-
Jason and the brethren were not violating the laws of the land. Titus 3:1-2 Remind them to be subject to rulers and authorities, to obey, to be ready for every good work, (2) to speak evil of no one, to be peaceable, gentle, showing all humility to all men. The testimony of the church is that we are law-abiding citizens. Philippians 2:15 that you may become blameless and harmless, children of God without fault in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world,
This is one side of the church. The other side is our witness to Christ as our King. He is the King of kings, and He is the Lord of lords. Revelation 19:16 And He has on His robe and on His thigh a name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS. / I Timothy 6:13-16 I urge you in the sight of God who gives life to all things, and before Christ Jesus who witnessed the good confession before Pontius Pilate, (14) that you keep this commandment without spot, blameless until our Lord Jesus Christ's appearing, (15) which He will manifest in His own time, He who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings and Lord of lords, (16) who alone has immortality, dwelling in unapproachable light, whom no man has seen or can see, to whom be honor and everlasting power. Amen.
Governments and rulers are expected to have laws that are good for society. We are also to be those who speak up against injustice and any form of legislation that oppresses the poor, but we do this respectfully, not violently. Proverbs 31:8-9 Open your mouth for the speechless, In the cause of all who are appointed to die. (9) Open your mouth, judge righteously, And plead the cause of the poor and needy. / Isaiah 1:17 Learn to do good; Seek justice, Rebuke the oppressor; Defend the fatherless, Plead for the widow.
When it comes to the matter of sharing the Gospel, we must be open, honest, uncompromising, firm and respectful. Acts 4:17-20 But so that it spreads no further among the people, let us severely threaten them, that from now on they speak to no man in this name." (18) So they called them and commanded them not to speak at all nor teach in the name of Jesus. (19) But Peter and John answered and said to them, "Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you more than to God, you judge. (20) For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard."
The command of the leaders to the apostles was a mandate, a decree and a law regarding speaking or teaching in the name of Jesus. Did the apostles lamely submit to this edict? They informed the leaders respectfully that they would not submit to this decree. This has to be our response to our national leaders if they institute such laws.
Learning: We must know our position as the church to the laws of the land regarding Jesus.
