Acts 16:16-18 Now it happened, as we went to prayer, that a certain slave girl possessed with a spirit of divination met us, who brought her masters much profit by fortune-telling. (17) This girl followed Paul and us, and cried out, saying, "These men are the servants of the Most High God, who proclaim to us the way of salvation." (18) And this she did for many days. But Paul, greatly annoyed, turned and said to the spirit, "I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her." And he came out that very hour.
Love of money leads us to use people for our advantage. The masters of this slave girl used this girl for their own profit. This is why the world has become selfish, and there are wars all over the world. All of this is because of the love of money.
I Timothy 6:6-10 Now godliness with contentment is great gain. (7) For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. (8) And having food and clothing, with these we shall be content. (9) But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and harmful lusts which drown men in destruction and perdition. (10) For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.
Godliness is to have the character of God, to represent God in the world. People meeting us and getting to know us must experience the character of God in us. Godliness must be combined with contentment. Contentment comes from being content in God. He is our sufficiency. Hebrews 13:5 Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, "I WILL NEVER LEAVE YOU NOR FORSAKE YOU."
The Lord has said that He would never leave us nor forsake us. So, why should we be discontented? II Corinthians 3:4-5 And we have such trust through Christ toward God. (5) Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think of anything as being from ourselves, but our sufficiency is from God,
The other reason for being content is that we are part of eternity. Philippians 3:18-21 For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ: (19) whose end is destruction, whose god is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame-who set their mind on earthly things. (20) For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, (21) who will transform our lowly body that it may be conformed to His glorious body, according to the working by which He is able even to subdue all things to Himself.
We belong to heaven. We do not belong to this earth. We look at our time here on earth as a tourist or as a visitor. Visitors and tourists do not engage in local activities. Yes, we do engage with the world in terms of the kingdom of God, not for our material well-being, for we are soon moving on to our eternal abode. Many of us in the church give mental concurrence to this statement, but we do not live for the kingdom of God, but only for our own agenda of life in this world.
Since we are moving to our eternal habitation, we must focus on building our treasures in heaven. Matthew 6:19-21 "Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; (20) but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. (21) For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
How do we lay up for ourselves treasures in heaven? Our hearts will be where we have our treasures. _I Timothy 6:17-19 Command those who are rich in this present age not to be haughty, nor to trust in uncertain riches but in the living God, who gives us richly all things to enjoy. (18) Let them do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to give, willing to share, (19) storing up for themselves a good foundation for the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life.
It is in letting go of our grip on money and in being ready to give and share what we have with others that we build our treasures in heaven, where we have our citizenship. It is those who give to others who are the blessed ones by God. Proverbs 11:25 The generous soul will be made rich, And he who waters will also be watered himself. / Acts 20:35 I have shown you in every way, by laboring like this, that you must support the weak. And remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that He said, 'It is more blessed to give than to receive.' "
