Acts 16:16-18 Now it happened, as we went to prayer, that a certain slave girl possessed with a spirit of divination met us, who brought her masters much profit by fortune-telling. (17) This girl followed Paul and us, and cried out, saying, "These men are the servants of the Most High God, who proclaim to us the way of salvation." (18) And this she did for many days. But Paul, greatly annoyed, turned and said to the spirit, "I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her." And he came out that very hour.
There is a strange but real connection between bondage to the spirit of divination and the love of money. It was the greed for money that made these masters use this slave girl, (who was possessed by the spirit of divination), for their end. We must see through this veneer of 'love of money' that is driving the world and see how the devil is bringing people further into his clutches. Love of money is a satanic snare.
This is why the Lord is showing us that love of money is directly against God. It is either mammon or the Lord who can be the Lord of our lives. Matthew 6:24 "No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.
How is it that we fall easily into the trap of love of money, set by the devil? The trap that the devil places in our path is anxiety. This is why the Lord gave us such a strong teaching on anxiety. Anxiety will soon lead us to the love of money. Many of us consider anxiety to be harmless, but anxiety/fear shows that our dependence is on money. Dependence on money is the love of money.
Matthew 6:25-34 "Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing? (26) Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? (27) Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature? (28) "So why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; (29) and yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. (30) Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? (31) "Therefore do not worry, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?' (32) For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. (33) But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. (34) Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.
We have, sadly, equated life with food, clothing and shelter. Whereas life is in God, not in our material well-being. It is the Lord, whom we must seek and His purposes, and not all of our material needs being provided by God. Our lives and those of our generations are in God's hands, and He undertakes for us. Our entire focus in life ought to be God. We know this passage of Scripture very well, yet we choose to be anxious, knowing that anxiety is the trap of the devil.
Will we decide to stop worrying about material things from now on? Will we let go of our material concerns into the hands of God, and will we seek to know Him and His kingdom purposes, to do them?
Trusting in God and not worrying over material things is the testimony of the church to the world. This is the distinction between the world and the church. The world has equated life with material things, whereas for us in the church, God is our life. Since our life is God-dependent, we have the freedom to share the Gospel with the world. If we share the Gospel as a theory or as a concept, and live as the world does by being anxious over material things, then our message has no relevance to the world.
God is our heavenly Father. He knows what is good for us. Our earthly fathers gave us things that they considered suitable for us. Does not our heavenly Father know far more than our earthly fathers? Then why should we worry? Every time we choose to worry over material things, we are making a big statement to the world. We are declaring, ...God is not our heavenly Father.
