Acts 16:16-18 Now it happened, as we went to prayer, that a certain slave girl possessed with a spirit of divination met us, who brought her masters much profit by fortune-telling. (17) This girl followed Paul and us, and cried out, saying, "These men are the servants of the Most High God, who proclaim to us the way of salvation." (18) And this she did for many days. But Paul, greatly annoyed, turned and said to the spirit, "I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her." And he came out that very hour.
When man rejects God, he is dust and dead. Importantly, man comes into the clutches of the devil. When man is in this state of rejection of God, he is prone and susceptible to being possessed by evil spirits. Matthew 12:43-45 "When an unclean spirit goes out of a man, he goes through dry places, seeking rest, and finds none. (44) Then he says, 'I will return to my house from which I came.' And when he comes, he finds it empty, swept, and put in order. (45) Then he goes and takes with him seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter and dwell there; and the last state of that man is worse than the first. So shall it also be with this wicked generation."
A man can make himself good and clean in his own eyes, but when he is not under the lordship of God or not submitted to God, he is open to the possession of the devil. The devil is looking for those whom he can possess. It is when a person gives a foothold for the devil that possession takes place. Ephesians 4:27 nor give place to the devil. (NKJV) / Ephesians 4:27 and do not make room for the devil. (NRSV)
This is why we must submit to God. When we submit to God and resist the devil, he will flee. James 4:7 Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.
The devil is prowling around to see whom he can capture and devour. I Peter 5:8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. The devil masquerades as an angel of light. II Corinthians 11:14 And no wonder! For Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light. The agenda of the devil is destruction. John 10:10 The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly. The agenda of God is life and life in all its fullness. The devil is completely against God, His purposes and everything that belongs to God.
God created man in His image. Now, man is alienated from God. The devil attacks mankind and all of God's creation relentlessly. Man, being in the image of God, has the freedom to choose to submit to God or give room to the devil. The Lord has made everything possible for man to submit to God, but it is for man to make the choice. The devil attacks man and seeks to take possession of him. He is manipulating man to do his will, which is against the will of God. II Timothy 2:26 and that they may come to their senses and escape the snare of the devil, having been taken captive by him to do his will. When man is in the possession of the devil, the devil leads man and all of creation further and further into chaos and destruction. Man has the authority to rule over God's creation, which the devil uses deceptively, cleverly and viciously against God, man and creation.
The Lord has stepped into creation and has set us free from the clutches of the devil. Colossians 1:13 He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love, We therefore submit to God, knowing the plans and the agenda of the devil. We submit to God as His church so that we can bring the kingdom of God here on earth, which is reeling under the horror of the devil. Matthew 16:18-19 And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it. (19) And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven."
The devil's agenda is to deceive us into hell with him. Revelation 12:9 So the great dragon was cast out, that serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was cast to the earth, and his angels were cast out with him. / Revelation 20:10 The devil, who deceived them, was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone where the beast and the false prophet are. And they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.
