Spread of the gospel
Acts 16 - Series 02/Episode 02 - Sun, 07th June 2026 - Spread of the gospel - Acts 16:06-10 - THE MACEDONIAN CALL - Acts 01:08
Acts 16:6 Now when they had gone through Phrygia and the region of Galatia, they were forbidden by the Holy Spirit to preach the word in Asia.
It was the divine intervention of God that the priority for the Gospel was given to Macedonia over Asia and Bithynia at that time. Acts 16:7 After they had come to Mysia, they tried to go into Bithynia, but the Spirit did not permit them. / Acts 16:9-10 And a vision appeared to Paul in the night. A man of Macedonia stood and pleaded with him, saying, "Come over to Macedonia and help us." (10) Now after he had seen the vision, immediately we sought to go to Macedonia, concluding that the Lord had called us to preach the gospel to them.
In history, we see that certain places received the Gospel earlier compared to others. Ethiopia, for example, received the Gospel early. Acts 8:38-39 So he commanded the chariot to stand still. And both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water, and he baptized him. (39) Now when they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught Philip away, so that the eunuch saw him no more; and he went on his way rejoicing.
There were people from different places who received the Gospel very early. Acts 2:7-11 Then they were all amazed and marveled, saying to one another, "Look, are not all these who speak Galileans? (8) And how is it that we hear, each in our own language in which we were born? (9) Parthians and Medes and Elamites, those dwelling in Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, (10) Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya adjoining Cyrene, visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, (11) Cretans and Arabs-we hear them speaking in our own tongues the wonderful works of God."
The following places received the Gospel in the first century. Judea, Samaria, Syria, Cyprus, Asia Minor, Greece, Italy, Egypt, Ethiopia, North Africa, Mesopotamia, Arabia and India. Why were these the places that first received the Gospel?
This follows the master plan of God. Acts 1:8 But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth."
The area of expansion of the Gospel followed the presence of Jewish communities in different cities of the world. Acts 13:5 And when they arrived in Salamis, they preached the word of God in the synagogues of the Jews. They also had John as their assistant. / Acts 13:15 And after the reading of the Law and the Prophets, the rulers of the synagogue sent to them, saying, "Men and brethren, if you have any word of exhortation for the people, say on."
The Roman Empire was the natural system and structure that facilitated the growth of the Gospel. The Roman administration provided safe and well-connected roads, sea routes and the common language of Greek for easy communication.
In all of this, God's work was taking place according to God's timing and system. Galatians 4:4 But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the law, / Acts 17:26-27 And He has made from one blood every nation of men to dwell on all the face of the earth, and has determined their preappointed times and the boundaries of their dwellings, (27) *so that they should seek the Lord, in the hope that they might grope for Him and find Him*, though He is not far from each one of us;
Persecution was one reason that caused the believers to flee to safer places, and they took the Gospel with them wherever they went. Acts 8:1 Now Saul was consenting to his death. At that time a great persecution arose against the church which was at Jerusalem; and they were all scattered throughout the regions of Judea and Samaria, except the apostles. / Acts 8:4 Therefore those who were scattered went everywhere preaching the word.
Being from India, I would look at India as a hub, from God's perspective. We received the Gospel early in history. I am of the view that the plan of God was for the Gospel to reach the ends of the earth. The Indian Christian Diaspora, being placed all over the world, would surely fulfil the purpose of God for the Gospel going from India to various parts of the world.
We must keep in mind that God's ways are far higher than ours. We may not understand many of the ways of God, but the Lord may choose to reveal them to us. Isaiah 55:8-9 "For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways," says the LORD. (9) "For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways, And My thoughts than your thoughts.
His ways are past finding out. Romans 11:33 Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and His ways past finding out!
