Acts 16:13 And on the Sabbath day we went out of the city to the riverside, where prayer was customarily made; and we sat down and spoke to the women who met there.
We see that Paul made it a practice to worship God with His people on the Sabbath day (Shabbat). Acts 13:14 But when they departed from Perga, they came to Antioch in Pisidia, and went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day and sat down. / Acts 17:2 Then Paul, as his custom was, went in to them, and for three Sabbaths reasoned with them from the Scriptures,
God commanded Israel to remember, keep, and sanctify the seventh day as a covenant sign. The Sabbath is not merely a rest day; it is a weekly act of remembrance, identity, obedience, worship, and communal renewal.
Exodus 20:8-10 "Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. (9) Six days you shall labor and do all your work, (10) but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the LORD your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates.
The explanation of the command is given. Exodus 31:15-17 Work shall be done for six days, but the seventh is the Sabbath of rest, holy to the LORD. Whoever does any work on the Sabbath day, he shall surely be put to death. (16) Therefore the children of Israel shall keep the Sabbath, to observe the Sabbath throughout their generations as a perpetual covenant. (17) It is a sign between Me and the children of Israel forever; for in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, and on the seventh day He rested and was refreshed.' "
The command of God is founded on God's creation design. Genesis 2:2-3 And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done. (3) Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made.
God blessed work. Genesis 2:15 Then the LORD God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to tend and keep it. God also blessed the seventh day with rest. Thus work and rest are both blessings from God, and we must learn to take both forward in the grace of God.
The understanding of rest was also deeply tied to the redemption of God's people from Egypt. Deuteronomy 5:14-15 but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the LORD your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your ox, nor your donkey, nor any of your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates, that your male servant and your female servant may rest as well as you. (15) And remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the LORD your God brought you out from there by a mighty hand and by an outstretched arm; therefore the LORD your God commanded you to keep the Sabbath day.
For us, as we set apart the day of rest to God, it is to recognise that we have entered the relationship of rest of God. We were once in slavery to sin, but now we are in God's rest. This rest that we have entered is the experience of God's Shalom. Hebrews 4:1 Therefore, since a promise remains of entering His rest, let us fear lest any of you seem to have come short of it.
When we believe in God, we enter into His rest. Hebrews 4:3-4 For we who have believed do enter that rest, as He has said: "SO I SWORE IN MY WRATH, 'THEY SHALL NOT ENTER MY REST,' " although the works were finished from the foundation of the world. (4) For He has spoken in a certain place of the seventh day in this way: "AND GOD RESTED ON THE SEVENTH DAY FROM ALL HIS WORKS";
Sadly, some have not entered into the rest of God because of disobedience. Hebrews 4:6 Since therefore it remains that some must enter it, and those to whom it was first preached did not enter because of disobedience,
The rest that we have in God is that we walk by faith and by His grace. It is the Lord who works out His salvation in us. We have entered His rest. Hebrews 4:9-10 There remains therefore a rest for the people of God. (10) For he who has entered His rest has himself also ceased from his works as God did from His.
We must therefore make every effort to enter and remain in the rest that God has provided and not lose it. Hebrews 4:11 Let us therefore be diligent to enter that rest, lest anyone fall according to the same example of disobedience.
Paul was particular to spend the Shabbat with the people of God, for He fully appreciated and embraced the rest that God gives.
