Acts 16:16-18 Now it happened, as we went to prayer, that a certain slave girl possessed with a spirit of divination met us, who brought her masters much profit by fortune-telling. (17) This girl followed Paul and us, and cried out, saying, "These men are the servants of the Most High God, who proclaim to us the way of salvation." (18) And this she did for many days. But Paul, greatly annoyed, turned and said to the spirit, "I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her." And he came out that very hour.
Salvation means "being rescued, delivered, or made whole by God". Salvation is described as God's act of delivering people from:
1. Sin. We are saved from the penalty of sin. II Corinthians 5:21 For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. We are saved from the power of sin. Romans 6:6 knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin. / Romans 6:14 For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but under grace. We will one day be free from the presence of sin. Revelation 21:27 But there shall by no means enter it anything that defiles, or causes an abomination or a lie, but only those who are written in the Lamb's Book of Life.
2. We are saved from death to life. John 5:24 "Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life.
We were dead because we were alienated from God. Ephesians 4:18 having their understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God, because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart; We were restored to life in God through Jesus Christ. Colossians 2:13 And you, being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses,
We were dead within ourselves. Romans 7:23-24 But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members. (24) O wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death?_ We were set right within ourselves and brought to life in Jesus Christ. Galatians 2:20 I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.
We were dead as our relationship with one another was severed. Titus 3:3 For we ourselves were also once foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving various lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful and hating one another. Jesus restored us in our relationship with one another. Ephesians 2:14 For He Himself is our peace, who *has made both one, and has broken down the middle wall of separation,
We were dead in our relationship with creation. Romans 8:19-22 For the earnest expectation of the creation eagerly waits for the revealing of the sons of God. (20) For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it in hope; (21) because the creation itself also will be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God. (22) For we know that the whole creation groans and labors with birth pangs together until now. We are now a new creation in Jesus Christ. II Corinthians 5:17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.
The Hebrew root for salvation is Yasha. Meaning to save, deliver, rescue, make wide, set free. The noun is Yeshua, meaning salvation, deliverance. Jesus' Hebrew name "Yeshua" literally means "Yahweh is salvation."
The Greek root for salvation is sōzō and sōtēria. Sōzō (verb) is to save, heal, restore, and make whole. Sōtēria (noun): salvation, deliverance, preservation. This demonstrates that salvation is holistic, encompassing the spiritual, emotional, physical, relational, communal and environmental aspects.
The root words reveal that salvation is not merely escaping hell or receiving forgiveness of sins, It is God's comprehensive work of making individuals, societies, communities, nations and all of creation whole again.
The devil intends to destroy us and creation, but the Lord gives us salvation. John 10:10 The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.
When the spirit of divination said that Paul and the team were those who proclaim the way of salvation, he was seeking to bring people into his clutches and destroy them.
