41 – Wed21Aug2024 – *Tremble at His word* - _Acts 10:09-33_ – PETER’S VISION – _Isaiah 66:02_

_Acts 10:32-33 Send therefore to Joppa and call Simon here, whose surname is Peter. He is lodging in the house of Simon, a tanner, by the sea. *When he comes, he will speak to you*.' (33)  So I sent to you immediately, and you have done well to come. Now therefore, *we are all present before God, to hear all the things commanded you by God*."_

Cornelius, his family, and friends were all gathered before God, to hear all the things commanded by God.

How wonderful it would be if this kind of anticipation and willingness would be present in the church. The devil distracts and places anxieties in our hearts that we are unable to have this eagerness in us. It is for us to resist the devil, for when we do so, he will flee.

This same eagerness can be seen among those of the synagogue in Berea. _Acts 17:11-12 These were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that *they received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so*. (12)  Therefore many of them believed, and also not a few of the Greeks, prominent women as well as men._

We live in times when we are bombarded with news and information, all screaming to be heard. This is the time for us to go to the Scriptures and be anchored in God’s word. His word alone is our sure foundation. *We live and move and have our being in God.*

We read of how King Hezekiah sent letters to people across Israel and Judah that they should all come together to keep the Passover. _II Chronicles 30:1 And Hezekiah sent to all Israel and Judah, and also wrote letters to Ephraim and Manasseh, that they should come to the house of the LORD at Jerusalem, to keep the Passover to the LORD God of Israel._

King Hezekiah pleaded with the people to return to the Lord and experience His forgiveness and healing. Some people responded but the majority laughed and mocked at the idea. _II Chronicles 30:10-11 So the runners passed from city to city through the country of Ephraim and Manasseh, as far as Zebulun; *but they laughed at them and mocked them*. (11)  Nevertheless some from Asher, Manasseh, and Zebulun humbled themselves and came to Jerusalem._

Praise the Lord, there was a special and beautiful response from the people of Judah to the move of Hezekiah. *_II Chronicles 30:12 Also the hand of God was on Judah to give them singleness of heart to obey the command of the king and the leaders, at the word of the LORD._*

*It is for us to resist the devil, overcome what hinders us, and give ourselves to be receptive to His word.* Nevertheless, even this response to obey God is a gift from God, which He gives when we ask Him. We ought to pray for ourselves and others that people will have an open and receptive heart to receive and obey God’s word.

God’s favour rests on those who tremble at His word. _Isaiah 66:2 For all those things My hand has made, And all those things exist," Says the LORD. "But on this one will I look: On him who is poor and of a contrite spirit, And *who trembles at My word*._

These are the ones who will increase in wisdom. _Proverbs 9:9-10 Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be still wiser; Teach a just man, and he will increase in learning. (10)  "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding._

When there is fear and reverence in our hearts for the word of God, the Lord will work out His word in us to do His good pleasure. _Philippians 2:12-13 Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; (13) for *it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure*._

*Receiving God’s word requires humility.* There needs to be a poor and contrite spirit within us to receive God’s word and apply it into our lives. This was the amazing character that was present in all those gathered in the home of Cornelius.

Most often, this poor and contrite spirit is what is absent in us, which causes us to miss out on the blessing of hearing and obeying His word. We see people, (I’m speaking of believers!) who are experiencing unexplainable challenges in their lives. When we try to tell them that there is a need for humility and brokenness to receive the word of God into their lives, and the blessings which follow, they are appalled.

*It is those who are in the church, who need to have this nature to be humble and contrite to receive God’s word. Repentance begins with the house of God.*

```God is warning us to have the same attitude as the people in the home of Cornelius, who were waiting to hear and obey the command of God.``` _Revelation 3:16-17 So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth. (17)  Because you say, 'I am rich, have become wealthy, and have need of nothing'—and do not know that you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked—_
