13 โ€“ 07Mar2022 โ€“ Abounding in the work of the Lord - Luke 24:01-08 - JESUS HAS RISEN - Bible reading: II Corinthians 5:18-20

โ€œThank You, Lord Jesus, that as we wait to meet You in the air, we have much work to do here on earth. The works that we do are the works of resurrection. In Jesus' name, we pray, Amen.โ€

Luke 24:7-8 saying, 'The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.' " (8) And they remembered His words.

We have considered I Corinthians chapter fifteen on how we are waiting to be meet the Lord in the air. This is the hope of resurrection. As we wait, we are fully engaged in good works.

I Corinthians 15:58 Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.

What are these โ€˜good works' that ought to be displayed in us as those who remain, waiting to be caught up together with the Lord in the air, if we do not fall asleep till that time?

Titus 2:12-14 teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age, (13) looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, (14) who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself His own special people, zealous for good works.

As we look forward to the return of our Lord, we have much work to do. These are called โ€˜good worksโ€™. We have been created and prepared for good works.

Ephesians 2:10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.

What is the overarching concern of God, to which we need to be aligned in all the works that we do? Our works must accomplish His purpose. What is the purpose of God?

Colossians 1:19-20 For it pleased the Father that in Him all the fullness should dwell, (20) and by Him to reconcile all things to Himself, by Him , whether things on earth or things in heaven, having made peace through the blood of His cross.

Godโ€™s concern is the reconciliation of ALL THINGS to Himself through Jesus, through His blood, shed on the cross. This is the purpose of God. Therefore, our task is to reconcile all things to God through Jesus.

II Corinthians 5:18-20 Now all things are of God, who has reconciled us to Himself through Jesus Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation, (19) that is, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not imputing their trespasses to them, and has committed to us the word of reconciliation. (20) Now then, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were pleading through us: we implore you on Christ's behalf, be reconciled to God.

This is the broad brush of the work that has been entrusted to us, as we wait for the return of the Lord. All the work that we do is to reconcile all things back to God in Christ Jesus.

How will the world see us, as we go about doing this work that the Lord has entrusted to us?

I Peter 2:11-12 Beloved, I beg you as sojourners and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts which war against the soul, (12) having your conduct honorable among the Gentiles, that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may, by your good works which they observe, glorify God in the day of visitation.

The people around us will know that our life was committed to the task of reconciling all of creation back to God. They will observe our conduct. They may speak evil of us but they will glorify God, when He returns, they will know that there was a worker of God in their midst, who sought to reconcile all things to God.

The word of God gives us the road map on how we should go about doing the works of God.

This is the culture in which we were designed to live. This is the framework for our everyday lives and the work that the Lord has given to us.

Genesis 1:28 Then God blessed them, and God said to them, "Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth."

Our works must be grounded in creation.

1

Be fruitful โ€“ To be fruitful is to develop and grow in all our inbuilt capacities and potentials. As we develop, we are ensuring that our works are a blessing to the society and community, whom we serve.

2

Multiply โ€“ Multiplication is about developing people. We make disciples. We enable people to be fruit bearers, starting from our families, on to all our concentric circles of influence in which God has placed us.

3

Fill the earth โ€“ Filling the earth is about our occupation. We must see the call of God in every vocation. There is no bifurcation of the sacred and the secular. All that we do is sacred and we do our work for the glory of God.

4

Subdue it - Harness the potentials of the earth for the glory of God and the good of man. There must be research, development and excellence in all the works that we do.

5

Have dominion - Rule over all of creation in the image of God. Ruling is about being one who serves .

We have the framework on which we can abound in the work of the Lord as we await His return.

Thought to ponder

Are you abounding in the works of the Lord?
