27 – 10 Feb 2022 – We must die with Christ, to live with Him - Luke 23:44-49 - THE DEATH OF JESUS - Bible reading: John 12:23-25

“Thank You, Lord Jesus, that You have given us the privilege to understand the death that You went through on the cross. You are now inviting us to die with You. We give You all the glory and praise and in Jesus' most precious name we pray, Amen.”

Let us now look at one more passage as we conclude our study of the death of Jesus.

Mark 15:44-45 Pilate marvelled that He was already dead; and summoning the centurion, he asked him if He had been dead for some time. (45) So when he found out from the centurion, he granted the body to Joseph.

We see here the official confirmation of the death of Jesus by Pilate. This is an important historical fact that must be noted.

This is the Gospel message of Jesus.

I Corinthians 15:1-4 Moreover, brethren, I declare to you the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received and in which you stand, (2) by which also you are saved, if you hold fast that word which I preached to you—unless you believed in vain. (3) For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, (4) and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures,

The Good news of Jesus that man must internalise is the death, the burial and the resurrection of Jesus. It is of no consequence, whatsoever, if we have all the understanding of the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus but have not appropriated the gospel message to ourselves, by faith.

The Lord Jesus is inviting each of us to die with Him, be buried with Him and rise again with Him.

John 12:23-25 But Jesus answered them, saying, "The hour has come that the Son of Man should be glorified. (24) Most assuredly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it produces much grain. (25) He who loves his life will lose it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life.

What Jesus did for us on the cross is complete but what is required of us is to receive this message by faith, by being crucified with Christ.

This is the place where we are reborn into the family of God. We take ourselves to the cross by faith and there, in humility, brokenness and repentance, we confess our sins, seek His forgiveness and we offer ourselves completely to Christ, to be crucified with Him.

The ‘self’ in us, which had been controlling our lives, has to now stepdown. Jesus now takes full charge of us and He lives and reigns from within us.

Since we still live in the body, we constantly live under the control of the Holy Spirit and not under the control of the flesh or the self.

II Corinthians 5:14-15 For the love of Christ compels us, because we judge thus: that if One died for all, then all died; (15) and He died for all, that those who live should live no longer for themselves, but for Him who died for them and rose again.

The love of Christ is that when Jesus died for us, He has taken upon Himself the death of all of us. Our response to His love is that we live no longer for ourselves but for Him.

If we say we are born again but we continue to let the self in us dictate our lives, then we have not received the Gospel. It is only when we are crucified with Christ that the life of Christ will flow through us.

Galatians 2:20 I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.

This life is no more about us but it is all about Jesus.

Colossians 3:3 For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.

It is unfortunate that many people claim that they understand all that Jesus has done for them on the cross but they are not being crucified with Christ, themselves.

II Timothy 2:11 This is a faithful saying: For if we died with Him, We shall also live with Him.

This is the simple, basic, fundamental statement of the Christian life.

There is no negotiation here. If a person does not live here then that person has no reality of the Gospel.

II Corinthians 4:10 always carrying about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our body.

How very sad that Jesus did all that He did for us on the cross but we do not experience His life in us, since we have not taken our ‘self’ to be crucified with Christ?

Our prayer, as we conclude this study of the death of Jesus, is that each of us will ensure that we are crucified with Christ, by faith, on a continuous basis so that we enjoy the life of Jesus flowing through us.

This is not only our experience but this is what we share with others as we present them with the Gospel. The Good news is to invite people to die with Christ, be buried and rise with Him.

Thought to ponder

Are you still giving room to your ‘self’?
