Fri 10 Dec 2021 – God’s will and fullness of joy - Luke 23:18-25 - THE WILL OF MAN (12) - Bible reading: I John 1:1-4

The Lord revealed Himself to us so that we would be surrendered to Him and do His will. We have chosen to reject God and go according to our own will. Today, we are in this terrible predicament of following our own will and not God’s will.

We are not in a frame of mind to repent, return and surrender our lives to Jesus. We are persisting to go our own way. We need His grace and mercy on us.

Luke 23:24-25 So Pilate gave sentence that it should be as they requested. (25) And he released to them the one they requested, who for rebellion and murder had been thrown into prison; but he delivered Jesus to their will.

Man’s will was being fully exercised. Even though this is what man has done, God has come into His world and He has revealed Himself to us so that we are without excuse for rejecting God.

John 1:10-11 He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him. (11) He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him.

This is God’s creation. We cannot do as we please. We were to submit to the Owner but we have ignored the Owner and we have gone our way.

Hebrews 1:1-3 God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, (2) has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds; (3) who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,

God could have ignored us, but He did everything to ensure that we had the fullness of joy, in Him. He has made Himself known and He longs for humanity to come to the place of surrender to His will.

I John 1:1-4 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, concerning the Word of life— (2) the life was manifested, and we have seen, and bear witness, and declare to you that eternal life which was with the Father and was manifested to us— (3) that which we have seen and heard we declare to you, that you also may have fellowship with us; and truly our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ. (4) And these things we write to you that your joy may be full.

This is the message of the church to our world. We have come into that surrendered relationship to the will of God. We, therefore, invite others too, to come into that surrendered relationship to the will of God, so that people’s joy may be full.

It will be terrible for those who chose to ignore the invitation and continue to live by their own will. It will be an eternity of torment and no one should reach that place. We invite people into the life of joy in Jesus, which begins here and now and carries into eternity.

John 1:1-4 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. (2) He was in the beginning with God. (3) All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. (4) In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.

Jesus is the beginning. All things are sourced in Jesus. In Jesus is life and this life is what gives man light.

John 1:5 And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.

This is the tragedy of humanity. The light has shone in the darkness but the darkness did not grasp it. The darkness in man and in our world has decided to ignore the light and man has chosen to go his own way.

John 1:12-13 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: (13) who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God .

The whole encounter and relationship with God are about His will and not ours. It is by His will that we are born and we continue on in the family of God.

Thought to ponder

Philippians 2:13 for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure.
