Luke 11 37-54 Repenting from hypocrisy Woe 9
*How great is His love and mercy* _Luke 11:37-54_
How great is God’s love and mercy on us that in spite of our rebellion and stubbornness to follow our own ways, He still pursues us that we will return to Him and find fullness of life in Him.
Our Lord was confronting the Pharisees and the religious leaders by addressing issues in their life, which they were blinded about. Our Lord loved them and longed for them to repent and turn to Him but repentance and turning to God was the not in their heart and mind. They considered themselves righteous and it was sinners, who needed repentance _Luke 11:42. Friends, do we see how easily we too can become pharisaical, if we are not open to God’s correction? Let us remember that our Lord is not only reaching out to the Pharisees but He is reaching out to us too, as He reaches out to them.
The expectation and the fundamental commandment of the Lord, has been placed by God to His people again and again, without ambiguity. It is for us to accept His ways and live by it. His commandments are not burdensome and it is for our good _I John 5:3/Deuteronomy 10:12-13._
God’s commandment is bi-directional, to love God and to love our neighbour _Mark 12:29-31._ This fundamental law of God cannot be substituted by undertaking rituals, rules and rites. To obey God is more important than sacrifice _Proverbs 21:3/I Samuel 15:22._
_We are so caught up in fasting and prayer, which are necessary spiritual disciplines but friends, let us recognise, that our Lord longs to see if we have concern for the issues that people around us are struggling under. Are we seeking to lose the bonds of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens on people, to let the oppressed go free and to break every yoke that people are weighed under? Somehow we have separated the social and spiritual and we tell ourselves that we must lean more towards the so called ‘spiritual’. Does the Bible separate these two areas? Why then are we separating them? _Isaiah 58:5-6._
The Jews and particularly, the Pharisees pursued the law of righteousness but they pursued it by works and not by faith. This is where they stumbled _Romans 9:31-32._ Did God throw up in hands in desperation and defeat?, No, not at all. Our Lord is using the stumbling of the Jews as a means to provoke them, for because of their stumbling, salvation came to the Gentiles. If their fall brought salvation to the Gentiles, how much more blessing would the world receive, if they, the Jews turn fully to the Lord? _Romans 11:11-12._
_Do we see the immensity of God’s love and His mercy?_
*Thought to ponder*
```Romans 11:33 Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and His ways past finding out!```
