_Acts 16:15 And when she and her household were baptized, she begged us, saying, "If you have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come to my house and stay." So she persuaded us.
Lydia was being proactive in making Paul consider her as part of the body of Christ. She was inviting the team to her home. We must go out of our way to build one another in the body of Christ. Paul and his team were total strangers to Lydia. She need not have taken this step of welcoming them to her home.
As soon as Lydia was converted, she manifested the beautiful gift of the Spirit, of hospitality. Romans 12:13 distributing to the needs of the saints, given to hospitality. Not many in the church have this gift of hospitality. Hospitality is costly and not easy. It forces us to sacrifice our time and resources for the comfort of others. Many of us feel that we are not in a position to provide hospitality. The matter is not about how grand or lavish we can be in providing hospitality, but it is our willingness to share what we have.
Isaiah 58:6-8 "Is this not the fast that I have chosen: To loose the bonds of wickedness, To undo the heavy burdens, To let the oppressed go free, And that you break every yoke? (7) Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, And that you bring to your house the poor who are cast out; When you see the naked, that you cover him, And not hide yourself from your own flesh? (8) Then your light shall break forth like the morning, Your healing shall spring forth speedily, And your righteousness shall go before you; The glory of the LORD shall be your rear guard.
The context in this passage is about sharing our bread with the hungry. Paul and the team had already been in Philippi for a few days. They had a place to stay. Lydia was not providing a place for homeless strangers. She was building fellowship in the body of Christ.
Acts 2:42 And they continued steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers. / Acts 2:46-47 So continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they ate their food with gladness and simplicity of heart, (47) praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved. This was the natural way of the growth of the early church. Fellowship in homes is a joyful experience where people are added to the church. Lydia's early step in her journey with Christ was that she was experiencing the fellowship of God's people. We can see that this step of Lydia caused a church to be born in her home. Acts 16:40 So they went out of the prison and entered the house of Lydia; and when they had seen the brethren, they encouraged them and departed.
Peter tells us to be hospitable without grumbling. I Peter 4:9 Be hospitable to one another without grumbling. If we are grumbling in our spirit, while being hospitable, then we are not displaying the nature of Christ. II Corinthians 9:6-7 But this I say: He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. (7) So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver. The nature of God is to give us all things lavishly. _Psalms 36:8-9 They are abundantly satisfied with the fullness of Your house, And You give them drink from the river of Your pleasures. (9) For with You is the fountain of life; In Your light we see light.
The churches of Macedonia demonstrated this character. II Corinthians 8:1-5 Moreover, brethren, we make known to you the grace of God bestowed on the churches of Macedonia: (2) that in a great trial of affliction the abundance of their joy and their deep poverty abounded in the riches of their liberality. (3) For I bear witness that according to their ability, yes, and beyond their ability, they were freely willing, (4) imploring us with much urgency that we would receive the gift and the fellowship of the ministering to the saints. (5) And not only as we had hoped, but they first gave themselves to the Lord, and then to us by the will of God.
Hospitality is a demonstration of brotherly love. Hebrews 13:1-2 Let brotherly love continue. (2) Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing some have unwittingly entertained angels. It is to this end that we have been called, to love one another. Loving one another is not by words but by deed. I John 3:17-18 But whoever has this world's goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him? (18) My little children, let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth. Lydia fulfilled this truth.
