Acts 16:15 And when she and her household were baptized, she begged us, saying, "*If you have judged me to be faithful to the Lord*, come to my house and stay." So she persuaded us.
The lesson that Lydia understood and assimilated immediately was that she must be faithful to the Lord. This is the first lesson that every new believer must recognise and embrace. Often, we leave new believers in Christ to be more content with the exuberant joy they will feel when they come to know Jesus. Good feelings may not always accompany when a person gives their life to Christ.
Look at the experience of Andrew. John 1:40-42 One of the two who heard John speak, and followed Him, was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother. (41) He first found his own brother Simon, and said to him, "We have found the Messiah" (which is translated, the Christ). (42) And he brought him to Jesus. Now when Jesus looked at him, He said, "You are Simon the son of Jonah. You shall be called Cephas" (which is translated, A Stone).
Andrew was so thoroughly impacted by Jesus that he knew with certainty that he had encountered the Messiah. Andrew had to bring his brother Simon to Jesus.
Nathanael's meeting with Jesus was extraordinary. John 1:47-49 Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward Him, and said of him, "Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom is no deceit!" (48) Nathanael said to Him, "How do You know me?" Jesus answered and said to him, "Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you." (49) Nathanael answered and said to Him, "Rabbi, You are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!" Nathanael was shaken when he knew that Jesus saw his inner man. He immediately acknowledged Jesus as the Son of God.
Each one's experience of meeting with Jesus is different. Yet, the one common non-negotiable place that all of us must come to, to begin our journey with Jesus, is the place of surrendering to the Lordship of Christ. Lydia began her walk with Jesus in the right place. She saw that she had to be faithful to the Lord.
Yesterday, we spoke of the covenant relationship that the Lord had with Abraham. Genesis 17:1 When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the LORD appeared to Abram and said to him, "I am Almighty God; walk before Me and be blameless. / Genesis 17:9 And God said to Abraham: "As for you, you shall keep My covenant, you and your descendants after you throughout their generations.
We also connected circumcision with burial. Colossians 2:11-12 In Him you were also circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the sins of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ, (12) buried with Him in baptism, in which you also were raised with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead. Lydia understood that the first and core relationship between her and the Master was to be faithful to the Lord.
Faithfulness to the Lord was the primary basis of the relationship of Israel as a nation to the Lord. Deuteronomy 6:4-9 "Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one! (5) You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength. (6) "And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. (7) You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up. (8) You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. (9) You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.
This was the answer of the Lord to the Scribe. Mark 12:28-31 Then one of the scribes came, and having heard them reasoning together, perceiving that He had answered them well, asked Him, "Which is the first commandment of all?" (29) Jesus answered him, "The first of all the commandments is: 'HEAR, O ISRAEL, THE LORD OUR GOD, THE LORD IS ONE. (30) AND YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, WITH ALL YOUR MIND, AND WITH ALL YOUR STRENGTH.' This is the first commandment. (31) And the second, like it, is this: 'YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.' There is no other commandment greater than these."
When we bring people to faith in Jesus, will we give them the very first step that they need to commit to, which is to be faithful to the Lord? This was the strong and clear direction that David placed before Solomon. I Chronicles 28:9 "As for you, my son Solomon, know the God of your father, and serve Him with a loyal heart and with a willing mind; for the LORD searches all hearts and understands all the intent of the thoughts. If you seek Him, He will be found by you; but if you forsake Him, He will cast you off forever.
