Acts 16:15 And when she and her household were baptized, she begged us, saying, "If you have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come to my house and stay." So she persuaded us.
Lydia's conversion was demonstrated in her baptism. This is the Great Commission for us. Matthew 28:18-20 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. (19) Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, (20) teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Amen.
Baptism is the full internalising of the Gospel. The Gospel consists of three sections, which are the death of Jesus, His burial and His resurrection. I Corinthians 15:1-4 Moreover, brethren, I declare to you the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received and in which you stand, (2) by which also you are saved, if you hold fast that word which I preached to you-unless you believed in vain. (3) For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, (4) and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures, To come to faith in Jesus, we must die with Him, be buried with Him, and we must rise with him to newness of life.
Paul connects baptism with the Gospel. Romans 6:3-4 Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? (4) Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
Let us consider each of the sections of the Gospel. The first is to die with Christ. Galatians 2:20 I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.
The self in us must die. Colossians 3:3 For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. This matter of dying with Christ is a continuous experience. II Corinthians 4:10 always carrying about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our body.
The self in us seeks gratification in some way or another, repeatedly. As we recognise that it is the self in us that wants significance, we must take it to the cross by faith at that very moment and be crucified with Christ. The Holy Spirit will alert us to the self in us seeking importance.
The second section of the Gospel is to be buried with Christ. Burial corresponds with circumcision in the Old Testament. Circumcision was a covenant relationship that God had with Abraham, that he would be holy from all the ways of the world. Genesis 17:1 When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the LORD appeared to Abram and said to him, "I am Almighty God; walk before Me and be blameless.
Burial parallels circumcision in that we are putting off the body of the sins of the flesh. Colossians 2:11-12 In Him you were also circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the sins of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ, (12) buried with Him in baptism, in which you also were raised with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead.
A beautiful example of burial is Zacchaeus. Luke 19:8-9 Then Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, "Look, Lord, I give half of my goods to the poor; and if I have taken anything from anyone by false accusation, I restore fourfold." (9) And Jesus said to him, "Today salvation has come to this house, because he also is a son of Abraham;
The resurrection experience is the life of the Holy Spirit that now operates, enabling us to live victoriously over sin. Romans 8:11 But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.
This law of the Spirit of God sets us free from the law of sin and death. Romans 8:2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death. This life in the Spirit of God gives us righteousness. Romans 8:4 that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.
Lydia and her household experienced the Gospel as they were baptised.
