Acts 16:14 Now a certain woman named Lydia heard us. She was a seller of purple from the city of Thyatira, who worshiped God. The Lord opened her heart to heed the things spoken by Paul.
The hand of the Lord was upon Lydia to open her heart to the word of God and bring her to faith in Jesus.
The word of the Lord was spoken to the Hellenists. The Lord touched their hearts, and a great number placed their faith in Jesus. Acts 11:20-21 But some of them were men from Cyprus and Cyrene, who, when they had come to Antioch, spoke to the Hellenists, preaching the Lord Jesus. (21) And the hand of the Lord was with them, and a great number believed and turned to the Lord.
It is the Lord who opens our ears to hear His word and speak His word to the weary. We must not be rebellious when He opens our ears and gives us understanding. The same applies to our hearers as well. When the Lord opens their ears to the word, they ought not to be disobedient to His word. Isaiah 50:4-5 "The Lord GOD has given Me The tongue of the learned, That I should know how to speak A word in season to him who is weary. He awakens Me morning by morning, He awakens My ear To hear as the learned. (5) The Lord GOD has opened My ear; And I was not rebellious, Nor did I turn away.
The Lord had been giving His word to His disciples. They were not letting the word penetrate their hearts for conversion to take place. On the road to Emmaus, the disciples were ready to receive the word into their hearts. The Lord opened their hearts to the understanding of the word. Luk 24:44-45 Then He said to them, "These are the words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things must be fulfilled which were written in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms concerning Me." (45) And *He opened their understanding*, that they might comprehend the Scriptures.
The Lord God has to draw people to Himself. It is the Lord God who teaches people. We must pray much that the Lord God would draw our hearers to Himself. We must be earnest in our preaching and teaching of the word, but it is the Lord who draws people to Himself. John 6:44-45 No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up at the last day. (45) It is written in the prophets, 'AND THEY SHALL ALL BE TAUGHT BY GOD.' Therefore everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to Me.
It is God who shows mercy on people. Romans 9:15-16 For He says to Moses, "I WILL HAVE MERCY ON WHOMEVER I WILL HAVE MERCY, AND I WILL HAVE COMPASSION ON WHOMEVER I WILL HAVE COMPASSION." (16) So then it is not of him who wills, nor of him who runs, but of God who shows mercy.
God's word does tell us that He does not want anyone to perish but that all should come to repentance. II Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance. At the same time, He will have mercy on whom He will have mercy. Romans 11:33 Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and His ways past finding out!
We must do the planting and watering, but it is the Lord who gives the increase. I Corinthians 3:6-7 I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the increase. (7) So then neither he who plants is anything, nor he who waters, but God who gives the increase.
The veil that covers our eyes is taken away when we turn to the Lord. It is the Lord who is transforming us into the image of Jesus from glory to glory. II Corinthians 3:16-18 Nevertheless when one turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. (17) Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. (18) But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord.
It is the Lord who gives us the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in Jesus Christ. This is our treasure in earthen vessels so that the excellence is of God and not of us. II Corinthians 4:6-7 For it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. (7) But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellence of the power may be of God and not of us.
