Faith in Jesus for Salvation
Acts 16 - Series 01/Episode 04 - Thu, 28th May 2026 - Faith in Jesus for Salvation - Acts 16:01-05 - THE INDUCTION OF TIMOTHY - II Timothy 01:05-06
Acts 16:1-3 Then he came to Derbe and Lystra. And behold, a certain disciple was there, named Timothy, *the son of a certain Jewish woman who believed*, but his father was Greek. (2) He was well spoken of by the brethren who were at Lystra and Iconium. (3) Paul wanted to have him go on with him. And he took him and circumcised him because of the Jews who were in that region, for they all knew that his father was Greek.
Let us consider Timothy's heritage. II Timothy 1:5-6 when I call to remembrance *the genuine faith that is in you*, which dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am persuaded is in you also. (6) Therefore I remind you to stir up the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands.
Timothy had learned the lesson of faith. II Timothy 3:14-15 But you must continue in the things which you have learned and been assured of, knowing from whom you have learned them, (15) and that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.
Much before Paul and Barnabas came to this region, there were people who were immersed in the Scriptures on the matter of faith in God. The Old Testament is all about faith in God. It is from this foundation of faith in God that Timothy transitioned to salvation through faith in Jesus.
This foundation of faith in God came from Abraham, who is the father of faith. Abraham believed in God in a situation where there was no hope for Sarah and him to have a child. Genesis 15:4-6 And behold, the word of the LORD came to him, saying, "This one shall not be your heir, but one who will come from your own body shall be your heir." (5) Then He brought him outside and said, "Look now toward heaven, and count the stars if you are able to number them." And He said to him, "So shall your descendants be." (6) And he believed in the LORD, and He accounted it to him for righteousness.
Abraham believed in God for the land. Genesis 13:8-9 So Abram said to Lot, "Please let there be no strife between you and me, and between my herdsmen and your herdsmen; for we are brethren. (9) Is not the whole land before you? Please separate from me. If you take the left, then I will go to the right; or, if you go to the right, then I will go to the left." / Genesis 13:14-15 And the LORD said to Abram, after Lot had separated from him: "Lift your eyes now and look from the place where you are-northward, southward, eastward, and westward; (15) for all the land which you see I give to you and your descendants forever. We see that Israel is on this land, which Abraham received by faith.
Abraham was willing to sacrifice his son, Isaac, by faith. Hebrews 11:17-19 By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises offered up his only begotten son, (18) of whom it was said, "IN ISAAC YOUR SEED SHALL BE CALLED," (19) concluding that God was able to raise him up, even from the dead, from which he also received him in a figurative sense.
Thus, children of Abraham are those who are of the faith of Abraham. Galatians 3:7-9 Therefore know that only those who are of faith are sons of Abraham. (8) And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel to Abraham beforehand, saying, "In you all the nations shall be blessed." (9) So then those who are of faith are blessed with believing Abraham. / Galatians 3:26-29 For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. (27) For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. (28) There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. (29) *And if you are Christ's, then you are Abraham's seed*, and heirs according to the promise.
The Lord told the Jews that Abraham rejoiced to see His day. John 8:56 Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My day, and he saw it and was glad." The Jews found this difficult to accept. Nicodemus found it difficult to understand, but he had to cross this bridge. He saw himself as a son of Abraham, but this is what the Lord told him. John 3:3 Jesus answered and said to him, "Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God."
These were the words of Simeon as he held baby Jesus in his arms. Luke 2:30-32 For my eyes have seen Your salvation (31) Which You have prepared before the face of all peoples, (32) A light to bring revelation to the Gentiles, And the glory of Your people Israel."
Timothy's life was rooted in faith in Jesus for salvation.
