Paul mentored Timothy
Acts 16 - Series 01/Episode 07 - Sun, 31st May 2026 - Paul mentored Timothy - Acts 16:01-05 - THE INDUCTION OF TIMOTHY - I Timothy 04:12-16
Acts 16:1-3 Then he came to Derbe and Lystra. And behold, a certain disciple was there, named Timothy, the son of a certain Jewish woman who believed, but his father was Greek. (2) He was well spoken of by the brethren who were at Lystra and Iconium. (3) Paul wanted to have him go on with him. And he took him and circumcised him because of the Jews who were in that region, for they all knew that his father was Greek.
Paul wanted Timothy to go with him. Paul was reproducing the character of Barnabas, who mentored people. Acts 15:37 Now Barnabas was determined to take with them John called Mark.
Barnabas took personal responsibility for John Mark. John Mark was his nephew. Colossians 4:10 Aristarchus my fellow prisoner greets you, with Mark the cousin of Barnabas (about whom you received instructions: if he comes to you, welcome him), Mark was exposed to the things of God. Acts 12:12 So, when he had considered this, he came to the house of Mary, the mother of John whose surname was Mark, where many were gathered together praying. It was at this point that John Mark joined Barnabas and Paul. Acts 12:25 And Barnabas and Saul returned from Jerusalem when they had fulfilled their ministry, and they also took with them John whose surname was Mark.
Barnabas was willing to invest in the life of John Mark. Paul demonstrated the same quality of Barnabas in investing in and developing Timothy.
Paul took Timothy with him when he was verified as a disciple, and the church spoke well of him. Timothy was not related to Paul, but Paul adopted him as a son. I Timothy 1:2 To Timothy, a true son in the faith: Grace, mercy, and peace from God our Father and Jesus Christ our Lord. / I Corinthians 4:17 For this reason I have sent Timothy to you, who is my beloved and faithful son in the Lord, who will remind you of my ways in Christ, as I teach everywhere in every church.
It was because Paul took Timothy with him, as a son, that Timothy matured to be a servant leader, Philippians 2:20-22 For I have no one like-minded, who will sincerely care for your state. (21) For all seek their own, not the things which are of Christ Jesus. (22) But you know his proven character, that as a son with his father he served with me in the gospel. / I Thessalonians 3:2-3 and sent Timothy, our brother and minister of God, and our fellow laborer in the gospel of Christ, to establish you and encourage you concerning your faith, (3) that no one should be shaken by these afflictions; for you yourselves know that we are appointed to this. This was proof of the character development of Timothy.
Timothy is seen as a young man who was always prepared to be moulded and shaped. Timothy was not just young in age, but he was also always open to correction and learning. This was the unique bonding that existed between Paul and Timothy. I Timothy 4:12 Let no one despise your youth, but be an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity. As a young man, Timothy was developed by Paul. I Timothy 4:13 Till I come, give attention to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine. Paul invested in Timothy so that he would be a blessing to others. I Timothy 4:16 Take heed to yourself and to the doctrine. Continue in them, for in doing this you will save both yourself and those who hear you.
Paul knew the gifting of God in Timothy. II Timothy 1:5-6 when I call to remembrance the genuine faith that is in you, which dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am persuaded is in you also. (6) Therefore I remind you to stir up the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands. Paul was keen to see that this gift of faith that was in Timothy should be developed. I Timothy 4:14 Do not neglect the gift that is in you, which was given to you by prophecy with the laying on of the hands of the eldership. This was the special bonding between Paul and Timothy.
Because of his Jewish mother and Greek father, Paul probably considered having Timothy with him to be strategic. Ephesus was a Gentile majority church. Acts 19:17-20 This became known both to all Jews and Greeks dwelling in Ephesus; and fear fell on them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified. (18) And many who had believed came confessing and telling their deeds. (19) Also, many of those who had practiced magic brought their books together and burned them in the sight of all. And they counted up the value of them, and it totaled fifty thousand pieces of silver. (20) So the word of the Lord grew mightily and prevailed.
Paul left Timothy in Ephesus. I Timothy 1:3 As I urged you when I went into Macedonia-remain in Ephesus that you may charge some that they teach no other doctrine,
