Acts 16:16-18 Now it happened, as we went to prayer, that a certain slave girl possessed with a spirit of divination met us, who brought her masters much profit by fortune-telling. (17) This girl followed Paul and us, and cried out, saying, "These men are the servants of the Most High God, who proclaim to us the way of salvation." (18) And this she did for many days. But Paul, greatly annoyed, turned and said to the spirit, "I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her." And he came out that very hour.
This slave girl was possessed by the spirit of divination with which she brought her masters much profit. The girl would have been tormented by the devil, but no one cared for her. People are in the clutches of the devil, and they are blindly serving him. II Corinthians 4:3-4 But even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing, (4) whose minds the god of this age has blinded, who do not believe, lest the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine on them.
This slave girl followed Paul and the team for many days, shouting out, "These men are the servants of the Most High God, who proclaim to us the way of salvation." This is what took place with Jesus, too. The man with the unclean spirit spoke with confidence, "Let us alone! What have we to do with You, Jesus of Nazareth? Did You come to destroy us? I know who You are-the Holy One of God!" Neither Jesus nor Paul entertained the words of the evil spirits. Why? Wasn't the evil spirit speaking what was true?
Mark 1:23-27 Now there was a man in their synagogue with an unclean spirit. And he cried out, (24) saying, "Let us alone! What have we to do with You, Jesus of Nazareth? Did You come to destroy us? I know who You are-the Holy One of God!" (25) But Jesus rebuked him, saying, "Be quiet, and come out of him!" (26) And when the unclean spirit had convulsed him and cried out with a loud voice, he came out of him. (27) Then they were all amazed, so that they questioned among themselves, saying, "What is this? What new doctrine is this? For with authority He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey Him." / Luke 4:41 And demons also came out of many, crying out and saying, "You are the Christ, the Son of God!" And He, rebuking them, did not allow them to speak, for they knew that He was the Christ.
Paul and our Lord Jesus commanded the evil spirits. Evil spirits do not have any authority over man or God's creation. They have come in by deceiving men and are holding people in captivity by trickery and deceit. They need to be cast out with authority.
The devil will speak, knowing Jesus is the Christ, but he must not even be allowed to speak, for his ways are always the ways of deception and lies. John 8:44 You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it.
The church has been given the authority to rule all of creation in Christ. Ephesians 1:19-23 and what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His mighty power (20) which He worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, (21) far above all principality and power and might and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in that which is to come. (22) And He put all things under His feet, and gave Him to be head over all things to the church, (23) which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all.
God's manifold wisdom must be made known by the church to rulers in the heavenly realms. Ephesians 3:9-11 and to make all see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the ages has been hidden in God who created all things through Jesus Christ; (10) to the intent that now the manifold wisdom of God might be made known by the church to the principalities and powers in the heavenly places, (11) according to the eternal purpose which He accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord,
We became prisoners of the devil because of sin. The devil is exercising authority over God's creation through man, who remains the ruler, though he has fallen into sin and is in the grip of the devil. The Lord set us free from sin in Christ so that we can once again fulfil our primary role and responsibility of ruling all of creation under God.
