Delivering the word
Acts 16 - Series 01/Episode 09 - Tue, 02nd June 2026 - Delivering the word - Acts 16:01-05 - THE INDUCTION OF TIMOTHY - Acts 15:23-29
Acts 16:4-5 And as they went through the cities, they delivered to them the decrees to keep, which were determined by the apostles and elders at Jerusalem. (5) So the churches were strengthened in the faith, and increased in number daily.
This was the message that Paul, Silas and Timothy delivered to the churches in different cities. Acts 15:23-29 They wrote this letter by them: The apostles, the elders, and the brethren, To the brethren who are of the Gentiles in Antioch, Syria, and Cilicia: Greetings. (24) Since we have heard that some who went out from us have troubled you with words, unsettling your souls, saying, "You must be circumcised and keep the law"-to whom we gave no such commandment- (25) it seemed good to us, being assembled with one accord, to send chosen men to you with our beloved Barnabas and Paul, (26) men who have risked their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. (27) We have therefore sent Judas and Silas, who will also report the same things by word of mouth. (28) For it seemed good to the Holy Spirit, and to us, to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things: (29) that you abstain from things offered to idols, from blood, from things strangled, and from sexual immorality. If you keep yourselves from these, you will do well. Farewell.
The message of the apostles in Jerusalem and the decrees that the churches needed to adopt were explained, and the churches received this. The church must be fed, nourished and built in the word of God. Ephesians 5:26-27 that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word, (27) that He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish._
The word of God is not a set of lofty ideals to be pondered on; it is the command of God to be obeyed. II Timothy 3:16-17 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, (17) that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.
The word of God must be taught with authority on how the word needs to be applied in the practical, daily life of the church. This is the model that the Lord has set before us. Matthew 7:28-29 And so it was, when Jesus had ended these sayings, that the people were astonished at His teaching, (29) for He taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.
This was the instruction of Paul to Titus. Titus 2:15 Speak these things, exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no one despise you. Timothy was instructed to bring the word of God to the church as the command of God. I Timothy 4:11 These things command and teach.
Paul made it clear to Timothy that his instruction on teaching the churches is a matter of judgment before God. II Timothy 4:1-4 I charge you therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and the dead at His appearing and His kingdom: (2) Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching. (3) For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; (4) and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables.
The task of the teacher of the word of God is to convince, rebuke, and exhort with all longsuffering and teaching. Yes, we must teach the word of God with patience, but the word of God must be taught without compromise. People generally reject this manner of teaching the word. Since this approach of teaching will not be received by the people, will we change our message? No. This is the uncompromising stand on the message of God for us as the teachers of God's word.
This is the word of God in a world of confusion. We must be confident about the word of God as we teach it to people. Psalm 119:105 Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path.
The teaching must be such that it will cause the hearers to apply the teaching to their everyday lives. The blessed person is not just the hearer of the word but a doer. We seek to bless the hearers of the word of God. James 1:22-25 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. (23) For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror; (24) for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was. (25) But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does.
