Acts 16:35-40 And when it was day, the magistrates sent the officers, saying, "Let those men go." (36) So the keeper of the prison reported these words to Paul, saying, "The magistrates have sent to let you go. Now therefore depart, and go in peace." (37) But Paul said to them, "They have beaten us openly, uncondemned Romans, and have thrown us into prison. And now do they put us out secretly? No indeed! Let them come themselves and get us out." (38) And the officers told these words to the magistrates, and they were afraid when they heard that they were Romans. (39) Then they came and pleaded with them and brought them out, and asked them to depart from the city. (40) So they went out of the prison and entered the house of Lydia; and when they had seen the brethren, they encouraged them and departed.
The Lord, in a dramatic way, transformed what seemed like a difficult and ominous situation. Paul and Silas rejoiced in the Lord and were dealing with the circumstances as they unfolded before them. All that had happened in this whole episode was the beautiful way of the unfolding of God's purposes.
The apostles had cast out the evil spirit of fortune-telling from the slave girl. Acts 16:17-18 This girl followed Paul and us, and cried out, saying, "These men are the servants of the Most High God, who proclaim to us the way of salvation." (18) And this she did for many days. But Paul, greatly annoyed, turned and said to the spirit, "I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her." And he came out that very hour. What followed was not in the hands of the apostles. They were falsely accused, condemned without a trial, stripped and beaten in public with rods, thrown into the inner prison and their feet fastened to stocks.
Now that they were in the inner prison, with their feet in stocks, bleeding and in pain, it was for them to respond. Respond, they surely did, in the enablement of the Holy Spirit. They prayed and sang hymns. Acts 16:25 But at midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them. Again, the situation was taken out of their hands. There was an earthquake, the prison doors were opened, and the prisoners were all loosed from their chains. The jailor decided to kill himself. Paul reacted quickly and saved the jailor's life. The jailor became deeply indebted to Paul for saving his life.
The prisoners had not fled but were with Paul and Silas, listening to them. The situation was once again not in the hands of the apostles. The Lord was working out great miracles, one after another. The apostles responded appropriately in the enablement of the Holy Spirit, in brief moments, but as we look at this entire episode, we can see the outworking of the mighty hand of God. Scripture repeatedly shows that God orchestrates people's paths, locations, and circumstances so that they fulfil His word at the appointed moment. Psalms 37:23-24 The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD, And He delights in his way. (24) Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down; For the LORD upholds him with His hand.
We see in this episode how the Lord was orchestrating the circumstances to bring people - the prisoners, the jailor and his entire family to repentance and faith in Him. Romans 2:4 Or do you despise the riches of His goodness, forbearance, and longsuffering, not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance?_ The apostles did not plan the beatings, the imprisonment, the earthquake, the prisoners staying back, or the conversion of the jailor and his family. They walked with the Lord one step at a time. It was the Lord who was working out His plans.
Psalms 57:2-7 I will cry out to God Most High, To God who performs all things for me. (3) He shall send from heaven and save me; He reproaches the one who would swallow me up. Selah. God shall send forth His mercy and His truth. (4) My soul is among lions; I lie among the sons of men Who are set on fire, Whose teeth are spears and arrows, And their tongue a sharp sword. (5) Be exalted, O God, above the heavens; Let Your glory be above all the earth. (6) They have prepared a net for my steps; My soul is bowed down; They have dug a pit before me; Into the midst of it they themselves have fallen. Selah (7) My heart is steadfast, O God, my heart is steadfast; I will sing and give praise.
Learning: Let us remain steadfast in the Lord for His ways are beyond expectations. Ephesians 3:20-21 Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, (21) to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.
