Acts 16:16-18 Now it happened, as we went to prayer, that a certain slave girl possessed with a spirit of divination met us, who brought her masters much profit by fortune-telling. (17) This girl followed Paul and us, and cried out, saying, "These men are the servants of the Most High God, who proclaim to us the way of salvation." (18) And this she did for many days. But Paul, greatly annoyed, turned and said to the spirit, "I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her." And he came out that very hour.
This girl, possessed by the spirit of divination, kept following Paul and the team, crying out that these men were the servants of the Most High God who proclaim to us the way of salvation. We can imagine that she would have been a source of fun, enjoyment, and entertainment for the public. Her fortune-telling brought much profit to her masters. Paul ignored her, but he couldn't hold back anymore. He was grieved and annoyed.
This ought to be our response to evil that happens around us. Paul and the team, knowing that this girl was possessed by an evil spirit, ignored it for some time but were compelled to take action. Let us keep in mind that the team were in a new continent for the Gospel. There were no Jewish synagogues where they could begin their ministry. They had met with the women who prayed by the riverside and had seen the Lord bring Lydia to faith in Him. They would have probably hesitated to take action since this was a new context. The Lord was opening the continent of Europe for the Gospel through this girl.
It is out of our obedience to God that we engage with the powers of darkness and bring down the strongholds of the enemy. II Corinthians 10:3-6 For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. (4) For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, (5) casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ, (6) and being ready to punish all disobedience when your obedience is fulfilled.
Our obedience to God causes us to be one with Him. John 14:23 Jesus answered and said to him, "If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him. In our obedience to God, God's love and His character are perfected in us. I John 2:5-6 But whoever keeps His word, truly the love of God is perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him. (6) He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked. When we obey His word, we will walk in this world as Jesus walked. We will see the world the way Jesus sees the world. The things that are against God will cause us grief and will anger us. The Lord's secrets are with those who obey Him. Psalm 25:14 The secret of the LORD is with those who fear Him, And He will show them His covenant. Obedience to God tells the world that we are on the Lord's side. The Lord will manifest Himself in us. John 14:21 He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and manifest Myself to him."
We see the extensive display of evil in our world. Does it grieve and anger us? Proverbs 8:13 The fear of the LORD is to hate evil; Pride and arrogance and the evil way And the perverse mouth I hate. Indignation must take hold of us because of evil. Psalm 119:53 Indignation has taken hold of me Because of the wicked, who forsake Your law.
If we are walking in obedience to God, then He will abide in us, and His thoughts and concerns will be ours. Jeremiah says that he is not able to hold back the fire of God's word in his heart and bones. This is how it will be when we walk in obedience to the Lord, that His word will be fire in our hearts and bones. Jeremiah 20:9 Then I said, "I will not make mention of Him, Nor speak anymore in His name." But His word was in my heart like a burning fire Shut up in my bones; I was weary of holding it back, And I could not.
Jeremiah was full of the fury of the Lord, and so it must be for us when we see evil. Jeremiah 6:11 Therefore I am full of the fury of the LORD. I am weary of holding it in. "I will pour it out on the children outside, And on the assembly of young men together; For even the husband shall be taken with the wife, The aged with him who is full of days.
