Acts 16:16-18 Now it happened, as we went to prayer, that a certain slave girl possessed with a spirit of divination met us, who brought her masters much profit by fortune-telling. (17) This girl followed Paul and us, and cried out, saying, "These men are the servants of the Most High God, who proclaim to us the way of salvation." (18) And this she did for many days. But Paul, greatly annoyed, turned and said to the spirit, "I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her." And he came out that very hour.
A spirit of divination in Scripture refers to a demonic influence that enables counterfeit supernatural revelation, especially fortune‑telling, omen‑reading, or attempts to access hidden knowledge apart from God. The Bible consistently treats it as real, dangerous, and forbidden. A spirit of divination is a non‑Holy Spirit supernatural power that gives predictive or revelatory abilities not sourced from God. It operates through deception, mixing partial truth with spiritual bondage and draws people away from trust in God toward illicit spiritual sources.
When a person gives himself increasingly to divination, that person will soon be possessed by the same evil spirit. This is likely what happened to the slave girl.
Divination is the central practise of most religions. This practise includes omens, mediums, magic, tarot cards, astrology, palm reading, fortune telling, sorcery, and similar activities. God has categorically forbidden these things for humanity.
It is because of the practise of divination that the Lord was driving the nations out from before the people of Israel. It was because of this evil of divination that Israel was chosen as a nation before God to be blameless before Him. Deuteronomy 18:9-13 "When you come into the land which the LORD your God is giving you, you shall not learn to follow the abominations of those nations. (10) There shall not be found among you anyone who makes his son or his daughter pass through the fire, or one who practices witchcraft, or a soothsayer, or one who interprets omens, or a sorcerer, (11) or one who conjures spells, or a medium, or a spiritist, or one who calls up the dead. (12) For all who do these things are an abomination to the LORD, and because of these abominations the LORD your God drives them out from before you. (13) You shall be blameless before the LORD your God.
By being blameless before God, Israel was chosen to be a light to these nations that were caught and bound by the spirit of divination. The Lord was setting nations free and bringing them to Himself to place their trust in Him. Leviticus 20:26-27 And you shall be holy to Me, for I the LORD am holy, and have separated you from the peoples, that you should be Mine. (27) 'A man or a woman who is a medium, or who has familiar spirits, shall surely be put to death; they shall stone them with stones. Their blood shall be upon them.' "
Israel was called to be set apart for God so that Israel would be a light to the nations and bring them from darkness and bondage to light and freedom in God. Isaiah 42:6-7 "I, the LORD, have called You in righteousness, And will hold Your hand; I will keep You and give You as a covenant to the people, As a light to the Gentiles, (7) To open blind eyes, To bring out prisoners from the prison, Those who sit in darkness from the prison house.
This truth applies to spiritual Israel, the church. We are to be a light to the nations. Luke 4:17-21 And He was handed the book of the prophet Isaiah. And when He had opened the book, He found the place where it was written: (18) "THE SPIRIT OF THE LORD IS UPON ME, BECAUSE HE HAS ANOINTED ME TO PREACH THE GOSPEL TO THE POOR; HE HAS SENT ME TO HEAL THE BROKENHEARTED, TO PROCLAIM LIBERTY TO THE CAPTIVES AND RECOVERY OF SIGHT TO THE BLIND, TO SET AT LIBERTY THOSE WHO ARE OPPRESSED; (19) TO PROCLAIM THE ACCEPTABLE YEAR OF THE LORD." (20) Then He closed the book, and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all who were in the synagogue were fixed on Him. (21) And He began to say to them,"Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing." / Ephesians 5:7-8 Therefore do not be partakers with them. (8) For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. *Walk as children of light
The Lord has called us to be sanctified to Him. We are to keep His statutes and obey them, for we belong to Him. Our hope and trust are in God. Leviticus 20:6-8 'And the person who turns to mediums and familiar spirits, to prostitute himself with them, I will set My face against that person and cut him off from his people. (7) Consecrate yourselves therefore, and be holy, for I am the LORD your God. (8) And you shall keep My statutes, and perform them: I am the LORD who sanctifies you.
