Acts 16:15 And when she and her household were baptized, she begged us, saying, "If you have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come to my house and stay." So she persuaded us.
Lydia was not just being hospitable and welcoming Paul and the team to her home to stay with them, but she begged and persuaded them to come. She compelled them to stay with her family.
This step that Lydia took to persuade Paul and the team to stay with her in her house was a public display of her conversion and leadership. This is very much similar to the conversion of Zacchaeus. Luke 19:8-9 Then Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, "Look, Lord, I give half of my goods to the poor; and if I have taken anything from anyone by false accusation, I restore fourfold." (9) And Jesus said to him, "Today salvation has come to this house, because he also is a son of Abraham;
Conversion to Jesus produces fruit in our lives. John 15:8 By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples. We have been affirming that fruit-bearing is about being a blessing to others, for the tree does not consume its own fruit but bears fruit for the blessing of others. This was what was happening with Lydia. She was bearing good and much fruit by being a blessing to Paul and the team.
John the Baptist made it clear to those who came to him to be baptised that they must bear the fruit of repentance. If there were no change in their behaviour, then it proves that there was no repentance at all. _Matthew 3:8 Therefore bear fruits worthy of repentance,_ Lydia's conversion was genuine, and she was bearing the fruit of repentance.
Genuine faith in God is seen in works. James 2:17-18 Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. (18) But someone will say, "You have faith, and I have works." Show me your faith without your works, and I will show you my faith by my works. / James 2:22 Do you see that faith was working together with his works, and by works faith was made perfect? / James 2:26 For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.
Conversion is also demonstrated by being connected with the people of God in a public manner. The new believers in Christ joined the body of Christ openly. Acts 2:41-42 Then those who gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them. (42) And they continued steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers._ Many were being added to the church. Acts 2:47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved.
Lydia's home was the strategic base of God's mission for the whole of Europe. Lydia persuaded Paul and the team to stay with her, but she was doing much more. She was providing the base for the church to be established in her home. Her position, status, financial strength and influence were all of immense value for the growth of the church. Acts 16:40 So they went out of the prison and entered the house of Lydia; and when they had seen the brethren, they encouraged them and departed.
A strong and generous church was established in Philippi. This character of the church resembles that of Lydia. Philippians 1:5 for your fellowship in the gospel from the first day until now, / Philippians 4:14-16 Nevertheless you have done well that you shared in my distress. (15) Now you Philippians know also that in the beginning of the gospel, when I departed from Macedonia, no church shared with me concerning giving and receiving but you only. (16) For even in Thessalonica you sent aid once and again for my necessities.
In the Greco‑Roman culture, refusing hospitality from someone who insists was dishonouring, rejecting their friendship and doubting their sincerity. Lydia's words- "If you judge me faithful..." -were a gentle but firm challenge - "Don't doubt my faith. Let me serve the Lord by serving you." Paul understood that what she was doing was from the Lord and not out of the flesh, and so he accepted her persuasion.
We see that Lydia was a leader in every sense. She took the initiative to persuade Paul and the team to stay at her home. She was not afraid of taking a risk, for they were total strangers to her. She was quick in taking this decision, for this would mean an investment of her time, resources and influence. She was quick, ready and willing to make that investment. She sensed in her spirit that this was the right step for her to take before the Lord, and she was bold to take that step. (How often have we been prompted by the Holy Spirit to act, but we have dithered and delayed and missed those precious opportunities to participate with the Lord in His kingdom!)
