01 – 15Apr2022 – His peace - Luke 24:36-49 - COMMISSIONED TO BE HIS WITNESSES - Bible reading: John 20:19-23
“Thank You, Lord Jesus, for transforming us by revealing Yourself to us. You send us to be part of the church to encourage and build each other. Lord, You then send us out to be Your witnesses. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.”
We begin a new study. This study is of Luke 24:36-49, which we will title as COMMISIONED TO BE HIS WITNESSES. We have completed the previous study of Luke 24:13-35, which we had titled, JESUS IS KNOWN IN THE SCRIPTURES. This study was of 24 lessons.
Luke 24:36-37 Now as they said these things, Jesus Himself stood in the midst of them, and said to them, "Peace to you." (37) But they were terrified and frightened, and supposed they had seen a spirit.
The two disciples had returned to Jerusalem and they met with the other disciples and shared with them how they had known Jesus in the breaking of the bread. As they were all together, the Lord appeared amongst them.
All the disciples were beginning to reckon with the fact that the Lord had risen from the dead, but all that was taking place was too baffling for these disciples. As they were in a state of excited confusion, the Lord stood in their midst. They were terrified.
This tells us how real these disciples were. They were not feigning to be knowledgeable and on top of all that was taking place.
We can identify with these disciples, for the Lord knows who we are and we do not need to pretend, to be in control. The Lord fully understands, and He knows our fears and doubt. Nevertheless, He does not want us to remain in our state of hesitation but moves us forward to the fullness of faith in Him.
Mark 16:14 Later He appeared to the eleven as they sat at the table; and He rebuked their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they did not believe those who had seen Him after He had risen.
The Lord reprimanded the disciples for their unbelief and hardness of heart in not believing that He had risen.
John 20:19-23 Then, the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the midst, and said to them, "Peace be with you." (20) When He had said this, He showed them His hands and His side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. (21) So Jesus said to them again, "Peace to you! As the Father has sent Me, I also send you." (22) And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit. (23) If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained."
John gives us a more detailed explanation of what happened when the Lord met with the disciples that evening. Let us look at the message that the Lord brought to the disciples, as He met with them. The message of the Lord to the disciples was the message of PEACE.
John 16:33 These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world."
Peace is a large experience. This is the SHALOM OF GOD. Shalom of God includes being right with God. Being right within ourselves.
Being right with one another and being right with the whole of the creation of God. Shalom is the wellness and well being of life that the Lord gives to us, when we are reconciled with Him. Shalom is the expression of the Good News. This is also the manifestation of the kingdom of God.
The understanding of Peace, in the Old Testament, is the Shalom of God. In the New Testament, the understanding of Peace is in being reconciled with God.
Romans 5:1 Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, Romans 5:10 For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life.
This experience of being reconciled with God, being saved and experiencing Shalom is all the same. This was the message of the angels.
Luke 2:13-14 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying: (14) “Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace, goodwill toward men!"
The message of Jesus is the message of PEACE. We will look further into the peace that the Lord has given to each of us and He makes us His instruments of peace to a peaceless world.
Thought to ponder
Are you experiencing the Shalom of God in Jesus?
