01 – 22Mar2022 – Enlightened lives - Luke 24:13-35 - JESUS IS KNOWN IN THE SCRIPTURES - Bible reading: Ephesians 1:17-19
“Thank You, Lord Jesus, for You are bringing the Scriptures alive for us. Holy Spirit God, please enlighten our hearts, minds and our understanding. We commit ourselves into Your loving hands. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.”
We have completed the previous study of Luke 24:09-12, which we had titled as, MEETING THE RISEN LORD. We now begin a new study of, Luke 24:13-35 which we will title as JESUS IS KNOWN IN THE SCRIPTURES.
Luke 24:13-16 Now behold, two of them were traveling that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was seven miles from Jerusalem. (14) And they talked together of all these things which had happened. (15) So it was, while they conversed and reasoned, that Jesus Himself drew near and went with them. (16) But their eyes were restrained, so that they did not know Him.
This study is about our perceptions of life. The frightening statement that we read here is about the perception of these two disciples. Their eyes were restrained, so that they did not know Him.
The most frightening place for a person to be is when that person’s eyes are restrained from knowing the true and living God. When people chose to be in this state of blindness, then the devil compounds the problem and keeps people in further blindness and darkness.
II Corinthians 4:3-4 But even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing, (4) whose minds the god of this age has blinded, who do not believe, lest the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine on them.
We, as children of God, must, consciously, ask the Lord to keep removing the blindness from our own eyes. We must ask the Lord to show us, where we are blinded.
How do we perceive life?
Luke 11:34-36 The lamp of the body is the eye. Therefore, when your eye is good, your whole body also is full of light. But when your eye is bad, your body also is full of darkness. (35) Therefore take heed that the light which is in you is not darkness. (36) If then your whole body is full of light, having no part dark, the whole body will be full of light, as when the bright shining of a lamp gives you light."
Our whole body must be enlightened by the light of the scriptures. The blindness in our lives must be taken away.
What was happening with the disciples at this time?
John 20:9-10 For as yet they did not know the Scripture, that He must rise again from the dead. (10) Then the disciples went away again to their own homes.
This statement that they went away again to their own homes, speaks volumes of the lack of anything special that was happening with them. Jesus had risen from the dead. This was the pivotal event of the history of the world but the disciples were indifferent.
This was the demeanour of the two disciples as they trudged their way to their home in Emmaus. Their eyes were not opened to Scriptures.
We cannot be like these disciples. Their perspective was still of the flesh, not of the Spirit. Their life was not lit up.
Proverbs 20:27 The spirit of a man is the lamp of the LORD, Searching all the inner depths of his heart.
The Lord searches the inner depths of our hearts. He sees that our perspectives have not changed but we are still looking at life from the perspective of the flesh. It is our spirit-man that must be lit up by the Lord. The Scriptures must bring light to our spirit-man.
I Corinthians 2:11 For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God
It is the Spirit of God, who knows the things of God. It is the Spirit of God, who reveals to us things of God.
I Corinthians 2:10 But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God.
If our spirit-man must be lit up, then it is the Spirit of God, who must take the things of God and bring them to us. The Scriptures, under the Holy Spirit, brings light to our inner man. We then perceive life from the eyes of God.
Our desire must be that God should bring more revelation from the Scriptures to our spirit-man, through His Holy Spirit, so that our perspectives will be that of God. These are perspectives, not only for us personally but also for us, as the body of Christ.
This was the prayer of Apostle Paul for the church.
Ephesians 1:17-19 that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him, (18) the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, (19) and what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His mighty power
As we begin this new study, let us come with anticipation, that God would bring more revelation to us from the Scriptures, so that our perspectives would change from the flesh to the Spirit. We must be lit up with the understanding of the Scriptures in our spirit-man.
Thought to ponder
The Lord does not want us to cling on to our perspectives of the flesh.
