Luke 20 1-8 THE AUTHORITY OF JESUS 01 Luke 20 1 The gospel of His kingdom
05Feb2021 - *The gospel of His kingdom* - _Luke 20:1-8_ - THE AUTHORITY OF JESUS 1 – Bible reading: _Mark 1:14-15_
We now begin a fresh study. This is from _Luke 20:1-8_, which we will title as, THE AUTHORITY OF JESUS.
We had said in the earlier study that the _20th chapter of Luke_ is about the confrontation and trickery of the leaders of the people, to Jesus. We also said that the intention of the religious leaders was to destroy Jesus but they wanted to do this without losing the support of the people.
So, they hoped that they will catch Jesus in His words and thereby condemn Jesus to death, with the backing of the people.
_Luke 20:1 Now it happened on one of those days, as *He taught the people in the temple and preached the gospel*, that the chief priests and the scribes, together with the elders, confronted Him_
We see here that Jesus was teaching in the temple and those were the few days before the crucifixion. We had said in the earlier study that the purpose of the temple was, ‘His Father’s house of prayer for all nations’.
The temple was the place for man to be reconciled with God and come into the habitat of God. The temple represented the habitat of God. It was in the temple that Jesus taught and preached the gospel. The good news was therefore presented in the right setting for the good news is for man to come back into the habitat of God and there be fulfilled.
Jesus came preaching the gospel of the kingdom. _Luke 4:43 but He said to them, "I must preach the kingdom of God to the other cities also, because for this purpose I have been sent."_
All through the gospels, we see that Jesus went about preaching and teaching the gospel of His kingdom.
_Mark 1:14-15 Now after John was put in prison, Jesus came to Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, (15) and saying, "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand. *Repent, and believe in the gospel*."_
Jesus wants us to repent and believe in the gospel of His kingdom. How do we understand repentance? Usually, repentance is seen as repentance from our sin, which is good, but repenting and believing in the gospel is about repenting from the previous kingdom in which we were under.
This previous kingdom is one in which we were kings of our own lives but it was, in a true sense, slavery, for we were victims and prisoners of the devil, who was dictating his agenda and fulfilling his will through us.
_II Timothy 2:26 and that they may come to their senses and escape the snare of the devil, having been *taken captive by him to do his will*._
The Lord has delivered us from the kingdom of the devil and transported us into the kingdom of His Son. _Colossians 1:13 He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love,_
This is the reason why we repent for being in the kingdom of darkness and we turn, surrender, submit and trust in Jesus to come into His kingdom of light.
Jesus was preaching and teaching the gospel of His kingdom and in His kingdom, the Lord gives us the fullness of life. Jesus healed people with all kinds of diseases.
The Lord longs for us to have life in all its fullness. This does not mean that when we come into the kingdom of Jesus, all of our sicknesses will be healed. Healing does happen but not in all cases but whether a person experiences healing or otherwise, one thing that is certain is that in His kingdom, we will be fulfilled in the Lord.
_Matthew 4:23 And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and *healing all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease among the people*. Matthew 9:35 Then Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and *healing every sickness and every disease among the people*._
Jesus taught about the life in the kingdom of God and this is explained to us in _Matthew 5-7_ as the Sermon on the mount.
The good news of Jesus is the good news of His kingdom.
*Thought to ponder*
```Jesus is inviting us to be citizens of His kingdom. Into which kingdom are you seeking to be a citizen?```
