*FRIEND OF GOD*
Thu15Jul2021 - *The full blessing of the Lord’s supper* - _Luke 22:7-13_ - PREPARING FOR THE PASSOVER MEAL (09) – Bible reading: _I Corinthians 2:9-12_
We have considered our preparation to come to the Lord’s supper. It is for us to make the best of this opportunity for His glory, of being at the table with our Master.
*We can go through the Lord’s supper as a ritual, which is what it has become to many of us, or we can make the Lord’s supper, an awesome experience for growth into the fullness of God’s purposes*.
_Luke 22:13 So they went and found it just as He had said to them, and they prepared the Passover._
When we are seated at the table with Him, we are in the presence of the Master, the Owner. We have attempted to use our imagination of being at His table to dine with the Lord God of heaven and earth.
*The Lord is the host at this meal and He is inviting us to supper with Him*. It is at this time that He reveals His concerns and burdens with us. It is at the meal that we receive our commission and purpose for our lives.
*What are some of the matters that would be crucial at this meal*?
*Firstly, and importantly, when we come to the table of the Master, can we come to Him empty-handed*? Can we present a soiled, smudged and spoilt gift to the Lord?
No. Our gift to Him has to be the very best. What will be the gift that we give our King, which is worthy of His greatness and glory?
_Micah 6:6-8 With what shall I come before the LORD, And bow myself before the High God? Shall I come before Him with burnt offerings, With calves a year old? (7) Will the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams, Ten thousand rivers of oil? Shall I give my firstborn for my transgression, The fruit of my body for the sin of my soul? (8) *He has shown you, O man, what is good; And what does the LORD require of you But to do justly, To love mercy, And to walk humbly with your God*?_
This is the offering of worship that we bring to our King. Our life must be a life of justice in an unjust world. We are here to bring God’s justice, righteousness and truth into our world.
We live in a world where treachery and varying standards are the norms. Where can we find the benchmark? Who sets the standards of right and wrong, in our fallen world?
This is why we are here, to bring the justice of God. This is our offering of worship to God.
We also need to be people of mercy. How do we consider people in our immediate vicinity?
Are we like the Priest and Levite, who had no mercy on the man who was injured or are we like the Samaritan, who showed mercy.? This is our offering to God.
We must also be those who walk humbly before our God. This is our offering of worship to our King.
When we come to the Lord’s table, we must come to Him in worship but our worship cannot be just words. *It has to be the worship of our lips and of our lives*. Only then what we present to Him will be worthy.
_Isaiah 29:13 Therefore the Lord said: "Inasmuch as these people draw near with their mouths And honor Me with their lips, But have removed their hearts far from Me, And their fear toward Me is taught by the commandment of men,_
*Secondly, when we sit at the meal with Him, He shares His concerns with us*. We must be at the table with all attentiveness.
_Habakkuk 2:2 Then the LORD answered me and said: "Write the vision And make it plain on tablets, That he may run who reads it._
The vision and commission of our life are received at the Lord’s table. If we do not take His words and run with them then our life is meaningless. Living only for ourselves will cause us to wither away.
*Thirdly, At the table, He asks us to ask Him, what we require from Him*. This is the invitation that He extends to us.
_Luke 11:9-10 “So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. (10) For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened._
What will we ask Him? Often, our asking is not right because we ask amiss.
_James 4:3 You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on your pleasures._
It is the Holy Spirit who teaches us how to pray and what to ask of the Lord.
_Romans 8:26-27 Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. (27) Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, *because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God*._
The will of God aligns with His character and nature.
_I Corinthians 2:9-12 But as it is written: "EYE HAS NOT SEEN, NOR EAR HEARD, NOR HAVE ENTERED INTO THE HEART OF MAN THE THINGS WHICH GOD HAS PREPARED FOR THOSE WHO LOVE HIM." (10) But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God. (11) For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God. (12) Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God._
How have you been participating at the Lord’s table thus far?
I would say, for many of us, it has been a ritual, a form, a rule. It could be that we never took the effort to find out the meaning of the Lord’s supper and its application.
*Thought to ponder*
```He is preparing us to eat and drink at His table in His kingdom.```
