Acts 17:9 So when they had taken security from Jason and the rest, they let them go.
Taking security from Jason and the brethren implied that they were made responsible for the riot. It was the unbelieving Jews who were the ones who had caused the unrest in Thessalonica. These unbelieving Jews did not feature in the official records as offenders and those whom the authorities needed to keep watch over. It was Jason and the brethren who were under the cloud, as insurgents and troublemakers in society. Isn't this totally unfair?
The word of God gives us the basis for understanding, appreciating, and embracing this life as disciples of Jesus. Hebrews 11:35-40 Women received their dead raised to life again. Others were tortured, not accepting deliverance, that they might obtain a better resurrection. (36) Still others had trial of mockings and scourgings, yes, and of chains and imprisonment. (37) They were stoned, they were sawn in two, were tempted, were slain with the sword. They wandered about in sheepskins and goatskins, being destitute, afflicted, tormented- (38) of whom the world was not worthy. They wandered in deserts and mountains, in dens and caves of the earth. (39) And all these, having obtained a good testimony through faith, did not receive the promise, (40) God having provided something better for us, that they should not be made perfect apart from us. All of us as the church are being called to the same life.
Paul spoke of his ministry to the Gentiles, and the Jews were angry and attacked him. Acts 22:21 Then He said to me, 'Depart, for I will send you far from here to the Gentiles.' " The Jews were terribly angry against Paul at this statement. Acts 22:22-23 And they listened to him until this word, and then they raised their voices and said, "Away with such a fellow from the earth, for he is not fit to live!" (23) Then, as they cried out and tore off their clothes and threw dust into the air, The Jews knew that they were called to be a blessing to the nations. Genesis 22:18 In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice.".
This was what happened with Jesus. Acts 13:26-30 "Men and brethren, sons of the family of Abraham, and those among you who fear God, to you the word of this salvation has been sent. (27) For those who dwell in Jerusalem, and their rulers, because they did not know Him, nor even the voices of the Prophets which are read every Sabbath, have fulfilled them in condemning Him. (28) And though they found no cause for death in Him, they asked Pilate that He should be put to death. (29) Now when they had fulfilled all that was written concerning Him, they took Him down from the tree and laid Him in a tomb. (30) But God raised Him from the dead. Though all that was done to Jesus was unjustified, it fulfilled the Scriptures. John 15:25 But this happened that the word might be fulfilled which is written in their law, 'THEY HATED ME WITHOUT A CAUSE.' All that is being done against the church is a fulfilment of the Scriptures. Acts 14:22 strengthening the souls of the disciples, exhorting them to continue in the faith, and saying, "We must through many tribulations enter the kingdom of God."
These light and momentary troubles are working for us eternal rewards. II Corinthians 4:16-18 Therefore we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day. (17) For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory, (18) while we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal.
The process of tribulation for the church is the way for us to live out the Christ-life. II Corinthians 4:7-10 But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellence of the power may be of God and not of us. (8) We are hard-pressed on every side, yet not crushed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; (9) persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed- (10) always carrying about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our body.
Learning: Since we know the process and the end of it all, we have the basis to pray for our persecutors. Matthew 5:44-45 But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, (45) that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.
