Acts 17:6 But when they did not find them, they dragged Jason and some brethren to the rulers of the city, crying out, "These who have turned the world upside down have come here too.
The world perceives the message of the Gospel and us who share it as troublers of society. Amos 7:10-13 Then Amaziah the priest of Bethel sent to Jeroboam king of Israel, saying, "Amos has conspired against you in the midst of the house of Israel. The land is not able to bear all his words. (11) For thus Amos has said: 'Jeroboam shall die by the sword, And Israel shall surely be led away captive From their own land.' " (12) Then Amaziah said to Amos: "Go, you seer! Flee to the land of Judah. There eat bread, And there prophesy. (13) But never again prophesy at Bethel, For it is the king's sanctuary, And it is the royal residence."
Amaziah the priest was angry with Amos for prophesying against King Jeroboam, the people, and the land of Israel. We can see how disturbing and irritating it must have been to hear Amos's message. Amos spoke God's message to the King and to the people.
Sharing the message of the Gospel cannot be contained in a particular framework. When people are hurting and troubled, God's word is a message of encouragement. Nevertheless, to those who are walking in arrogance towards God, the message of God will be a hammer that breaks into their hearts. We must be led by the Holy Spirit and sensitive to the voice of God so that we speak the Gospel relevant to our circumstances. God's Word comforts the broken, confronts the proud, and the Holy Spirit shapes the messenger to speak what is needed in that moment.
Isaiah 50:4-5 "The Lord GOD has given Me The tongue of the learned, That I should know how to speak A word in season to him who is weary. He awakens Me morning by morning, He awakens My ear To hear as the learned. (5) The Lord GOD has opened My ear; And I was not rebellious, Nor did I turn away. The Lord awakens us to hear and speak His word to those in need. We must submit to the Holy Spirit to seek and listen to the voice of God. If we think we already know the ways of God or the answers to the issues that people face, then we are making a grave mistake. We must not be rebellious but submit to God.
Jeremiah 23:28-29 "The prophet who has a dream, let him tell a dream; And he who has My word, let him speak My word faithfully. What is the chaff to the wheat?" says the LORD. (29) "Is not My word like a fire?" says the LORD, "And like a hammer that breaks the rock in pieces?
God's word is fire that burns the chaff and the hammer that breaks the rock in pieces. This was how Jeremiah's words were to the people. When the Babylonians surrounded Jerusalem, this was the word of the Lord through Jeremiah. Jeremiah 38:2-3 "Thus says the LORD: 'He who remains in this city shall die by the sword, by famine, and by pestilence; but he who goes over to the Chaldeans shall live; his life shall be as a prize to him, and he shall live.' (3) Thus says the LORD: 'This city shall surely be given into the hand of the king of Babylon's army, which shall take it.' " / Jeremiah 21:8-9 "Now you shall say to this people, 'Thus says the LORD: "Behold, I set before you the way of life and the way of death. (9) He who remains in this city shall die by the sword, by famine, and by pestilence; but he who goes out and defects to the Chaldeans who besiege you, he shall live, and his life shall be as a prize to him. The word of God was to defect to the Chaldeans. This did not sound like God's word at all.
Then, when the people were intending to flee to Egypt. The word of the Lord to the people through Jeremiah was that they should not go to Egypt. Jeremiah 42:17-18 So shall it be with all the men who set their faces to go to Egypt to dwell there. They shall die by the sword, by famine, and by pestilence. And none of them shall remain or escape from the disaster that I will bring upon them.' (18) "For thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: 'As My anger and My fury have been poured out on the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so will My fury be poured out on you when you enter Egypt. And you shall be an oath, an astonishment, a curse, and a reproach; and you shall see this place no more.'
It seemed as though Jeremiah was making contradictory statements. On both occasions, the people did not heed the prophecy of Jeremiah.
