“Lord Jesus, we pray that we will learn from the experience of the Israelites that we do not make the same mistakes that they did in their walk with You. In Your name, we pray. Amen.”
_Acts 7:36 He brought them out, after he had shown wonders and signs in the land of Egypt, and in the Red Sea, and in the wilderness forty years._
The Lord was taking the people out of Egypt and He was taking them to the promised land, the land that God had promised to their fathers.
_Exodus 33:1 Then the LORD said to Moses, "Depart and go up from here, you and the people whom you have brought out of the land of Egypt, to the land of which I swore to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, saying, 'To your descendants I will give it.'_
God is the God of the covenant. He will not go back on His covenant. He longs that we keep our part of the covenant with Him so that He can have a close intimate relationship with us.
_Exodus 33:3-6 Go up to a land flowing with milk and honey; for I will not go up in your midst, lest I consume you on the way, for you are a stiff-necked people." (4) And when the people heard this bad news, they mourned, and no one put on his ornaments. (5) For the LORD had said to Moses, "Say to the children of Israel, 'You are a stiff-necked people. I could come up into your midst in one moment and consume you. Now therefore, take off your ornaments, that I may know what to do to you.' " (6) So the children of Israel stripped themselves of their ornaments by Mount Horeb._
We find here that God is expressing His deep anguish against His own people for they were stiff-necked and rebellious. They worshipped God with their lips but their hearts were far away from God. _Isaiah 29:13 Therefore the Lord said: "Inasmuch as these people draw near with their mouths And honor Me with their lips, But have removed their hearts far from Me, And their fear toward Me is taught by the commandment of men,_
Their fear of God was taught by the commandments of men.
The people of Israel were to be a demonstrative model of God’s covenant love. God kept His covenant with them and they were to reciprocate by being His covenant people. They were to be His wife. They were to remain in trust and submission to Him. They, instead, did not submit to Him but went after other gods.
Deuteronomy 4:33-38 Did any people ever hear the voice of God speaking out of the midst of the fire, as you have heard, and live? (34) Or did God ever try to go and take for Himself a nation from the midst of another nation, by trials, by signs, by wonders, by war, by a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, and by great terrors, according to all that the LORD your God did for you in Egypt before your eyes? (35) To you it was shown, that you might know that the LORD Himself is God; there is none other besides Him. (36) Out of heaven He let you hear His voice, that He might instruct you; on earth He showed you His great fire, and you heard His words out of the midst of the fire. (37) And because He loved your fathers, therefore He chose their descendants after them; and He brought you out of Egypt with His Presence, with His mighty power, (38) driving out from before you nations greater and mightier than you, to bring you in, to give you their land as an inheritance, as it is this day._
The Israelites were a blessed people. The Lord God had revealed Himself to them in the most unique manner but yet their love for God was inconsistent.
How is it with us as His church? Are we single-mindedly in love with our God? We too are like the Israelites, inconsistent in our walk with our God.
This was the response of the Hebrews to all the wonderful miracles that God did among them. _Psalms 78:42 They did not remember His power: The day when He redeemed them from the enemy,_ / _Psalms 78:56 Yet they tested and provoked the Most High God, And did not keep His testimonies,_
All that took place with the Israelites are lessons for us so that we do not follow the dictates of our hearts. _I Corinthians 10:6 Now these things became our examples, to the intent that we should not lust after evil things as they also lusted._
It was because of His name since they were known as the people of the God of heaven and earth, that the Lord did His mighty works in their midst. _Psalms 106:8 Nevertheless He saved them for His name's sake, That He might make His mighty power known._
```Will the church respond wholeheartedly to our God, knowing the greatness of His power?```
