Acts 17 - Series 02/Episode 13 - Wed 21st Oct 2026 - A community of God's people - Acts 17:10-15 - MINISTRY IN BEREA - II Corinthians 04:06-07

Acts 17:11-12 These were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so. (12) Therefore many of them believed, and also not a few of the Greeks, prominent women as well as men.

The Scriptures reveal to us truth, for God's word is truth. John 17:17 Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth. It is God's word that sanctifies us. Are we conscious that our hearts can take us away from God? Jeremiah 17:9-10 "The heart is deceitful above all things, And desperately wicked; Who can know it? (10) I, the LORD, search the heart, I test the mind, Even to give every man according to his ways, According to the fruit of his doings. This is why our hearts need to be guarded. Proverbs 4:23 Keep your heart with all diligence, For out of it spring the issues of life.

Knowing the condition of his own heart, the Psalmist prays for inner cleansing. Psalm 51:10 Create in me a clean heart, O God, And renew a steadfast spirit within me. He knows that the Lord will not despise a broken and a contrite heart. Psalm 51:17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, A broken and a contrite heart-These, O God, You will not despise. He prays that he should not wander away from the commands of God. Psalm 119:10 With my whole heart I have sought You; Oh, let me not wander from Your commandments!

The Lord promises us that He will give us a new heart and spirit. Ezekiel 36:25-27 Then I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you shall be clean; I will cleanse you from all your filthiness and from all your idols. (26) I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. (27) I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will keep My judgments and do them. Should this not be the longing that the Lord would do this great work of cleansing in us?

This work of cleansing of our hearts God does as we come to Him in faith. Acts 15:8-9 So God, who knows the heart, acknowledged them by giving them the Holy Spirit, just as He did to us, (9) and made no distinction between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith. The danger is an unbelieving heart. This unbelief will lead us to the hardness of the heart. Hebrews 3:12-13 Beware, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief in departing from the living God; (13) but exhort one another daily, while it is called "TODAY," lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.

Are we longing for this inner cleansing? Let us ask the Lord to give us that deep thirst for His word in us. Psalms 42:1-2 As the deer pants for the water brooks, So pants my soul for You, O God. (2) My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When shall I come and appear before God? Our heart and our flesh must cry out for God. Psalm 63:1 O God, You are my God; Early will I seek You; My soul thirsts for You; My flesh longs for You In a dry and thirsty land Where there is no water.

He who is longing and living in the truth comes to the light. John 3:21 But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they have been done in God." We ought to be those who are living in the light of Jesus. John 1:4 In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. This light of Jesus in us is what makes us lights in the world. Matthew 5:14-16 "You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. (15) Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. (16) Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.

We are always conscious that this excellence is of God and not of us. II Corinthians 4:6-7 For it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. (7) But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellence of the power may be of God and not of us. This pursuit of the Scriptures and being lights is not just an individual pursuit, but it is a pursuit as the body of Christ.

The Jews in Berea were seeking to walk with the Lord as a community of believers.
