Acts 17:5 But the Jews who were not persuaded, becoming envious, took some of the evil men from the marketplace, and gathering a mob, set all the city in an uproar and attacked the house of Jason, and sought to bring them out to the people.
Envy is evidence of the flesh. Galatians 5:19-21 Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, (20) idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, (21) envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
The church is specifically warned against envy. Galatians 5:24-26 And those who are Christ's have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. (25) If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. (26) Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another.
Paul gives us the dynamics of how we can overcome the flesh and live in the Spirit. By the flesh we cannot please God. Romans 8:8 So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God. When Christ comes into our lives, our body is dead because of sin, but the Spirit of God gives us the life of righteousness. Romans 8:9-10 But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His. (10) And if Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin, but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. We must therefore reckon ourselves to be dead indeed to sin. Romans 6:11 Likewise you also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord. We must make this choice not to let sin reign in our finite bodies. Romans 6:12 Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in its lusts. We are not to present our bodies as instruments of unrighteousness to sin. Romans 6:13 And do not present your members as instruments of unrighteousness to sin, but present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God.
Paul is telling us that the resource to overcome sin is not ours. Ours is only to choose not to present our bodies to sin. When we come to Christ, we are alive, and the strength to overcome sin is from the Spirit of God. Romans 8:4 that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.
Is choosing not to present our bodies to sin that difficult? It is like choosing not to eat the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Yet, Adam and Eve chose to eat the fruit. The strength not to eat the fruit of this tree was given to them by the Spirit of God. Genesis 2:7 And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being. They were keenly aware that they were living souls because of the Spirit of God. They were to have remained in this place, but they did not trust the Spirit of God, who was there to enable them to live.
When we come to Christ, the Spirit of God takes residence in us. John 14:17 the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you. Knowing that the Spirit of God will enable us to live victoriously over sin, we choose not to present our bodies to sin. Personal choice is something that God will not take away from us. Isaiah 1:19-20 If you are willing and obedient, You shall eat the good of the land; (20) But if you refuse and rebel, You shall be devoured by the sword"; For the mouth of the LORD has spoken. / Revelation 3:20 Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me.
The Lord does everything to help us will and do His good pleasure. Philippians 2:13 for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure. It is the Holy Spirit who gives life to our mortal bodies to live victoriously over sin. Romans 8:11 But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.
