Acts 16 - Series 04/Episode 32 - Mon 17th Aug 2026 - Desperate measures - Acts 16:16-40 - EXPERIENCES AT PHILIPPI - Romans 08:38-39

(Welcome to my website: valentinedavidar.in)

Acts 16:26-28 Suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken; and immediately all the doors were opened and everyone's chains were loosed. (27) And the keeper of the prison, awaking from sleep and seeing the prison doors open, supposing the prisoners had fled, drew his sword and was about to kill himself. (28) But Paul called with a loud voice, saying, "Do yourself no harm, for we are all here."

Why did the jailor want to kill himself? Yes, a catastrophe had happened. The jailor assumed that all the prisoners had fled, especially Paul and Silas.

The magistrates had commanded the jailor to keep Paul and Silas securely. Acts 16:23 And when they had laid many stripes on them, they threw them into prison, commanding the jailer to keep them securely. The jailor was now made personally responsible for them, and he had taken all precautions in placing them in the inner prison and fastening their feet to the stocks. He then made the mistake of going to sleep.

A Roman jailor was personally, legally, and militarily responsible for every prisoner. If even one escaped, he faced torture and execution. Suicide was the only way to avoid a far worse fate. We see that when Peter was set free from prison, Herod executed all the guards. Acts 12:19 But when Herod had searched for him and not found him, he examined the guards and commanded that they should be put to death. And he went down from Judea to Caesarea, and stayed there.

The Philippian jailor would be examined over the episode, and it would come to light that he had been sleeping at the time of the earthquake. This meant definite, torturous execution for him. He decided that it was better to kill himself.

In the Roman system, a jailor who lost prisoners could face public beating, torture, slow death, disgrace to his family, loss of honour and confiscation of property. Suicide was considered honourable, quick, a way to protect his family from disgrace and a way to avoid torture.

We are seeing increasingly that people find themselves in high-pressure situations and they consider taking their lives as the only way out of their predicament. It is tragic to see so many young people take their lives.

.

We must know that we are of Divine worth. Genesis 2:7 And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.

God created us beautifully and wonderfully, and we must give an account of ourselves before God. Psalms 139:13-16 For You formed my inward parts; You covered me in my mother's womb. (14) I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Marvelous are Your works, And that my soul knows very well. (15) My frame was not hidden from You, When I was made in secret, And skillfully wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. (16) Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed. And in Your book they all were written, The days fashioned for me, When as yet there were none of them.

We live here with a purpose, with others, to bring the kingdom of God. Genesis 1:26 Then God said, "Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth."

Everyone comes to the place of despair at various times in life. I Kings 19:4 But he himself went a day's journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a broom tree. And he prayed that he might die, and said, "It is enough! Now, LORD, take my life, for I am no better than my fathers!" / Job 3:1 After this Job opened his mouth and cursed the day of his birth. / Jeremiah 20:14 Cursed be the day in which I was born! Let the day not be blessed in which my mother bore me! / II Corinthians 1:8 For we do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, of our trouble which came to us in Asia: that we were burdened beyond measure, above strength, so that we despaired even of life.

Yet, it is in these miserable times that our Lord strengthens us. Psalm 34:18 The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, And saves such as have a contrite spirit. / Isaiah 41:10 Fear not, for I am with you; Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, Yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.' / Romans 8:38-39 For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, (39) nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

The jailor would soon come to know Jesus and experience His love.
