Acts 16:19-21 But when her masters saw that their hope of profit was gone, they seized Paul and Silas and dragged them into the marketplace to the authorities. (20) And they brought them to the magistrates, and said, "These men, being Jews, exceedingly trouble our city; (21) and they teach customs which are not lawful for us, being Romans, to receive or observe."
The people of Philippi levelled this charge against Paul and the team that, as Jews, they were troubling the city.
This was the word of God for the people of Israel through Moses. Exodus 19:5-6 Now therefore, if you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant, then you shall be a special treasure to Me above all people; for all the earth is Mine. (6) And you shall be to Me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.' These are the words which you shall speak to the children of Israel."
The Jews were to be a peculiar people over all the people on the face of the earth. Deuteronomy 14:2 For you are a holy people to the LORD your God, and the LORD has chosen you to be a people for Himself, a special treasure above all the peoples who are on the face of the earth. The Jews were chosen to be a special treasure for God above all other people.
This separation of the Jews began with Abraham. Genesis 12:1-3 Now the LORD had said to Abram: "Get out of your country, From your family And from your father's house, To a land that I will show you. (2) I will make you a great nation; I will bless you And make your name great; And you shall be a blessing. (3) I will bless those who bless you, And I will curse him who curses you; And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed."
Abraham had to leave his people and be set apart for God. In the covenant with Abraham, the Lord prepared him to receive two types of responses from the world. People would bless him and his descendants, and there would be those who would curse him and his descendants. Right there, the Lord set in place that the Jews would be a peculiar people, set apart from the ways of the world. This is how they have been all through the centuries, and we have seen how nations have hated the Jews, the phenomenon that we today call anti-Semitism.
The enemies of Israel were angry that the Jews who had returned from captivity were building the wall and the temple. Ezra 4:1 Now when the adversaries of Judah and Benjamin heard that the descendants of the captivity were building the temple of the LORD God of Israel, They wrote a letter to King Artaxerxes. Ezra 4:12-13 Let it be known to the king that the Jews who came up from you have come to us at Jerusalem, and are building the rebellious and evil city, and are finishing its walls and repairing the foundations. (13) Let it now be known to the king that, if this city is built and the walls completed, they will not pay tax, tribute, or custom, and the king's treasury will be diminished. Look at the evil and crooked way in which they schemed to harm the Jews. Ezra 4:15-16 that search may be made in the book of the records of your fathers. And you will find in the book of the records and know that this city is a rebellious city, harmful to kings and provinces, and that they have incited sedition within the city in former times, for which cause this city was destroyed. (16) We inform the king that if this city is rebuilt and its walls are completed, the result will be that you will have no dominion beyond the River. The Holocaust and all that has happened in history tell us how Jews are hated around the world.
Jewish Scripture and tradition have shaped the moral and spiritual fibre of much of the world. The belief in one God has transformed religious history. The Ten Commandments are the foundation of Western law and ethics. The Hebrew Bible is the base for Christianity. The Prophetic tradition has provided us with the basis for justice, mercy, and human dignity.
Jewish thinkers such as Philo of Alexandria, Spinoza, Martin Buber and others have contributed significantly to global intellectual life. Although Jews are less than 0.2% of the world population, Jewish individuals have received over 20% of Nobel Prizes. Jewish economists and social thinkers have influenced global systems. Jewish artists have enriched global culture. Jewish jurists and activists have shaped modern human rights frameworks. Jewish thinkers pioneered modern psychology. In recent decades, Israel has contributed significantly to agriculture, drip irrigation, and desert farming. In technology - cybersecurity, AI, and medical devices. In medicine - cancer research, emergency care systems, and in humanitarian aid - disaster response worldwide.
Yet, the world at large hates Jews. This is what we see happening here. The people of Philippi were revealing their deep-seated animosity against the Jews by accusing the apostles of being Jews who were troubling the city.
