Acts 16 - Series 04/Episode 11 - Mon, 27th July 2026 - Exercising God's authority - Acts 16:16-40 - EXPERIENCES AT PHILIPPI - Luke 09:01

(Welcome to my website: valentinedavidar.in)

Acts 16:16-18 Now it happened, as we went to prayer, that a certain slave girl possessed with a spirit of divination met us, who brought her masters much profit by fortune-telling. (17) This girl followed Paul and us, and cried out, saying, "These men are the servants of the Most High God, who proclaim to us the way of salvation." (18) And this she did for many days. But Paul, greatly annoyed, turned and said to the spirit, "I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her." And he came out that very hour.

Command and authority have been given to the church in the name of Jesus Christ to execute His purposes. Acts 3:6-8 Then Peter said, "Silver and gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk." (7) And he took him by the right hand and lifted him up, and immediately his feet and ankle bones received strength. (8) So he, leaping up, stood and walked and entered the temple with them-walking, leaping, and praising God.

Peter spoke with authority and gave a command in the name of Jesus Christ. He said, "Rise up and walk". We pray for the sick to be healed in the name of Jesus. Do we command the person to rise out of their sickness in the name of Jesus?

People were amazed at the healing of the lame man, and Peter used this opportunity to speak to the people about Jesus Acts 3:11-12 Now as the lame man who was healed held on to Peter and John, all the people ran together to them in the porch which is called Solomon's, greatly amazed. (12) So when Peter saw it, he responded to the people: "Men of Israel, why do you marvel at this? Or why look so intently at us, as though by our own power or godliness we had made this man walk?

At the preaching of Peter, five thousand people came to faith in Jesus. Acts 4:4 However, many of those who heard the word believed; and the number of the men came to be about five thousand.

Peter used the healing of the lame man to present Jesus to the leaders of the people. Acts 4:7-14 And when they had set them in the midst, they asked, "By what power or by what name have you done this?" (8) Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, "Rulers of the people and elders of Israel: (9) If we this day are judged for a good deed done to a helpless man, by what means he has been made well, (10) let it be known to you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead, by Him this man stands here before you whole. (11) This is the 'STONE WHICH WAS REJECTED BY YOU BUILDERS, WHICH HAS BECOME THE CHIEF CORNERSTONE.' (12) Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved." (13) Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated and untrained men, they marveled. And they realized that they had been with Jesus. (14) And seeing the man who had been healed standing with them, they could say nothing against it.

We see the boldness of Peter and John because the authority of Jesus was so heavily upon them. The healed man standing by their side was proof of Jesus' authority over lameness and every other disease. Following the healing of the lame man, there was a mighty growth of the church.

We must be rested in the Lord and move with the Holy Spirit, knowing that this is not about us, but it is the authority of Jesus upon us, by which we command the ways and works of God into different situations where the Lord leads us.

We see another incident of the exercise of the authority of Jesus. Acts 9:33-35 There he found a certain man named Aeneas, who had been bedridden eight years and was paralyzed. (34) And Peter said to him, "Aeneas, Jesus the Christ heals you. Arise and make your bed." Then he arose immediately. (35) So all who dwelt at Lydda and Sharon saw him and turned to the Lord.

Peter gave a command to Aeneas. "Aeneas, Jesus the Christ heals you. Arise and make your bed." People of Lydda and Sharon turned to the Lord because of this miracle. We call it a miracle, but this was the exercise of God's authority over sickness.

This is the authority that the Lord has given to the church in His name, because He is seated at the right hand of God, and all authority has been given to Him. _Luke 9:1 Then He called His twelve disciples together and gave them power and authority over all demons, and to cure diseases. Will we exercise His authority in His name and bring the rule of God on earth?
