Acts 16 - Series 01/Episode 06 - Sat, 30th May 2026 - Discipleship - Acts 16:01-05 - THE INDUCTION OF TIMOTHY - John 13:34-35

Acts 16:1-3 Then he came to Derbe and Lystra. And behold, a certain disciple was there, named Timothy, the son of a certain Jewish woman who believed, but his father was Greek. (2) He was well spoken of by the brethren who were at Lystra and Iconium. (3) Paul wanted to have him go on with him. And he took him and circumcised him because of the Jews who were in that region, for they all knew that his father was Greek.

Paul and Silas were visiting to encourage and be encouraged by the churches that were planted in this region by Paul and Barnabas. As we can imagine, the conversation was to share the highlights of the things that had happened since they last met. The believers would have been thrilled that from among them, a gem of a disciple of Christ had developed, and that disciple was Timothy.

The task of the church is to make disciples. Matthew 28:18-20 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. (19) Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, (20) teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Amen.

The church in this area of Lycaonia and the Roman region of Galatia was obeying the Great Commission. Are we making disciples of Christ? Are we raising Timothys?

Disciple-making was the ministry of Paul and Barnabas. Acts 14:21 And when they had preached the gospel to that city and made many disciples, they returned to Lystra, Iconium, and Antioch, The disciples in this region were making more disciples, and Timothy was one of them. They were following the principle of disciple-making. II Timothy 2:2 And the things that you have heard from me among many witnesses, commit these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.

Those who come to faith in Christ must also be eager to grow as disciples. Acts 2:42 And they continued steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers. Thus, disciple making has an effort from both sides, from the side of the church as well as from the side of those who come to faith in Christ. When both sides are one in this task, then the result of making disciples of Christ is glorious. This was the excitement in the churches of the Lycaonian and Galatian regions.

Disciple-making itself has a clear focus. Colossians 1:28 Him we preach, warning every man and teaching every man in all wisdom, that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus. Individually, we are all expected to grow as disciples of Christ, which is to be conformed to Christ.

Although making disciples of Christ and growing as disciples of Christ are individual journeys, it is also the church's responsibility to grow together as disciples of Christ. We, together, are growing into the full stature of Christ. To this end, the Lord has given gifts to the church. Ephesians 4:11-13 And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, (12) for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, (13) till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ;

We, therefore, speak the word of God to each other to cause us to grow together into the fullness of Christ. Ephesians 4:15-16 but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head-Christ- (16) from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love.

The dynamic of this growth is also explained to us. Ephesians 3:16-19 that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man, (17) that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love, (18) may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and depth and height- (19) to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.

We are the body of Christ. Ephesians 5:30 For we are members of His body, of His flesh and of His bones. We have to be one. How else can people around us see Jesus? John 13:34-35 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. (35) By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another."

Discipleship is linked to the mission of the church.
